I received a phone call from a number I did not recognize originating from Athens, IL. I let it go to voicemail. The message indicated that it was someone from the Social Security Administration informing me that my social security number was involved in a crime and that legal action would be taken against me if I did not call back. They also told me that my social security number would be suspended which I already knew was a lie since that is not possible. Given what I have heard about phone scams, I felt inclined to report the number.

I received a call from the above referenced number. They said they were from the Social Security Administration, SSA, and there was a problem with my account and i should verify my number. The area code, 616, is from Michigan.

The person who answered the phone did not give a name and did not know mine.

Needless to say, I hung up immediately.

today is 08/8/19. I have received so far 3 calls from 850-738-1655 and it is now 2:21pm. it is a recording stating they are social security and that my social security number has been compromised. the first call came in at 1:04pm, then 1:45pm, and then 2:18pm. I hung up after about 10 seconds of the recording. But i already know that the social security admin would not call you. I hope this helps someone else.
