My elderly mother received a phone call this morning from Social Security. I answered the phone. The caller ID showed the phone number 216-921-1722. It was a recording. It stated your Social Security number in being used fraudulently in Texas. Press one to hear the information being used against you. I pressed number one. A man asked my moms first name. I gave it out. They also had an old address for her. He stated we are going to have to shut it down and defend it. They asked for her Social Security number. I said no. I answer my mothers phone calls.

I received an unknown call from 707-308-1279 which I rolled to voicemail. In the voicemail message an automated recording noted that my social security number was, or would be, suspended. Instructions were provided in the message to return the call to 707-308-1279 in order to resolve the issue. I did not return the call and immediately blocked the phone number.

- Amarillo, TX, USA

I was contacted by a person (recording) identifying himself as from the Social Security Administration stating that my social security number had been used and I was going to have to have another social security card issued. He said to stay on the line and someone would give me additional information. The next man stated that my number was going to have to be re-issued because someone had used my number incorrectly. I gave my name only and then accidentally disconnected the call. When I called the number back, the man who answered stated he had not called me.

- Sausalito, CA, USA

The SSA impostor says the consumer's Social Security administration had identified suspicious activity within the individual's number and is at risk of being suspended due to suspicious activity. They are encouraged to return the call or press 1 to speak to someone who then attempts to gather information.

- Florence, AL, USA

On August 5th, 2020 I received a call that was a recording saying that it was the social security administration as my ss number was being fraudulently used in South Texas as to press 1 to give them information regarding the case. I immediately hung up the phone and told my elderly mother that I was glad she didn't answer the phone. The caller id was a local number and has a person's name as well.

- Port Townsend, WA, USA

I received a robo call saying that my S.S.# had been used fraudulently and that it was going to be suspended. To speak with a rep press 1. I did so. I was told that there was fraudulent use of my card and that it would be suspended I.T. I didn't understand and numerous times asked the person (who I now think was an imposter) to slow down as I have a hearing impairment. The line was quite noisy with static which is why I was suspecting from the start. But I went forward as I've just started receiving unemployment from WA State and was concerned that if this was real it could impact my benefits. The person on the phone said she was: Officer Sophia James Badge # 37894 of the S.S. Administration. When I later asked her location she said S.S. HQ in Baltimore MD. I was told that this call was being recorded for use by three agencies: Federal Trade Commission, the Better Business Bureau and the Financial Crime Enforcement Network. This also seemed odd but I went ahead as I was told there was a warrant out for my arrest and that I was being investigated. Several times I stopped to ask if I should be getting representation (like speaking with a lawyer) as I had never been notified of either the fraud nor any criminal activity being associated with me and I have not committed any crime. When I still thought this might be more legit I noted that WA state Unemployment office is having thousands of fraudulent claims and I wondered if this issue might be related to my UEI. I was given this number as a record number (not sure for which record, she was talking quickly and I was trying to write it all down): 02954698. I was told that according to the local sheriff there were two houses where criminal drug trafficking was taking place and that the purchase of these homes was associated with my SS# as were several bank accounts and money laundering including 20K transfer of funds to Mexico. Was I familiar with these addresses: 1245 E. 16th Ave El Paso Tx and 7609 Oscent Ave El Paso Tx. I answered no & that I've never been to that part of Texas, have no bank account at the 5 banks she asked me about, haven't recently lost a credit/debit, ss card or wallet, don't use drugs nor drink. I again asked her questions to ascertain the legitimacy of the call. She said that Marshalls had all ready given all my information and that I needed to answer true answers now in order for my S.S.# to not be seized. She then asked me for all my addresses. I said I was in the process of changing one. I asked her to give the addresses and she said I had to give them. I went along and gave all three of my addresses (mailing, former residence, current residence) naming my current one as current. (Of everything I said, I'm most concerned that they have this info about my residential address and UE insurance). Her tone became more threatening when I said I'd like more information and to see what I need to do on my end before answering further. So we went on a bit further... She said "You sound like an innocent person. We already have all your information. We need your true answers. You sound honest.. if your info does not match I cannot help you further. You try to give your best. Then we'll submit it in the courthouse. We are making sure you're not the criminal." She asked how many cars or trucks I had. I said two. She asked what class of drivers' lic Regular or commercial. I answered. She demanded I give the names of my banks. I said no. She hung up.

Called supposedly from SSA. Said fraud on my number and would cancel.

I received a call from the number above stating that the Social Security Administration had received information that my social security number had been used in fraudulent activity. I was instructed to press 1 for more information, A live operator then came on the line and identified himself as being with the Social Security Administration and repeating that my SSN had been used in fraudulent activity. We I advised that I did not believe he was with the SSA and this was a scam he began cursing and then hung up.

1st I got a recorded call saying my SSN has been used in fraudulent activity. Sounded legit. And to call the number back.

She answered as SSAdmin and asked me to verify the last four digits of my SSN.

Then she said 300lbs of cocaine had been found along the Texas Border with all my credit cards and sited all my current cards open. Said money laundering was being wired through accounts opened in my name. I asked how come I didnt see it on any of it happening. She gave some kind of good enough answer. She remained quite calm and direct. And I could hear other people around her on the phone. Sounded like a big office.

I asked how I knew if this isnt a scam, and she said I could take down her ID and name. "Jennifer Miller SSA 197432

I googled this and said, "You are a scam," and she hung up.

Received a call from a guy named Jack with a heavy Indian accent letting me know that my Social Security number has been compromised. He called from *** ***** ********* and said he was with the Social Security Administration.

- El Paso, TX, USA

Automated answer machine stated that illegal activity was reported on my Social Security. Then I was asked to stay on the line. Then a male with and Hindu accent answered the call and asked me for my name. I then gave him my name and then he stated that illegal activity was noticed using my social security number. He then asked if I have been contacted by the FBI OR DEA. He the asked me to verify my social security number. I then told him I could not share that with him over the phone and he immediately hung up. Tried calling the number back and after a few rings the call went straight to voice mail. Please be careful and don't provide anyone with your social security number.
