The caller had very thick middle eastern accent. He stated that I had been picked by lottery to receive some sort of a prize. I asked him where he was from again. He repeated that he was from the United States Government and I was picked by lottery. I told him I do not want anything he had to offer and hung up.

I received a call the evening of June 27 from a woman claiming to be from the US Government. She had a heavy foreign accent, but I'm not sure where she was from. The call came back as a California number. I had received a call like this last year, it followed the exact same script, so I knew it was a scam immediately. She first stated my name and said I won a government grant because I had no criminal record and I had not been behind on taxes or something along those lines. I let her go through her whole script because I figured the longer I had her on the line, the less people she would be able to scam. I forget the amount of money she said I won but I know it was in the thousands. She then asked if I wanted to have the money directly deposited and if so she needed my account number. She said I also had the option of receiving the money on a prepaid card or money gram type deposit. I told her that I am a reporter for a newspaper, which I am, and I had just done a story warning people against these types of scams. She hung up on me.

The caller asked if it was really me. And after I said 'yes', I remembered there's a 'yes' scam going around. I hung up but I think he may have recorded the 'yes' since there was a lag before his next sentence.

I have gotten a call from people who are claiming that they are from the United States government saying that I have won a grant for 9000$ and then to register the refundable deposit is due of 250$. I have been in touch with the United States government and they said it was a scam. The only information I have is a call back number 315 510-5565 ext. 2255 for the person who I spoke with.
