Because I use Xfinity (Comcast) as my telephone provider, they use the prefix "[V]" to indicate it's a "Verified" caller (which is stupid!) instead of using something like "???" to indicate a NON-Verified caller. As a result, spammers/scammers can easily SPOOF their caller id by simply PREFIXING it with "[V]", thereby misleading the person being called to mistakenly believe it is a legitimate ("verified") call, when in fact it is a spammer/scammer!
Xfinity/Comcast needs to fix this!
You should NEVER prefix the caller's SUPPOSED Caller id with a string to indicate a legitimate call! Rather, the complete OPPOSITE should be done! The caller's supposed caller id should be prefixed with something to indicate it is NOT legitimate!
Scammers/spammers can easily SPOOF their caller id to anything they want! But they cannot REMOVE (or change) the caller id that your telephone provider sends to your phone!
EXAMPLE:
Current Xfinity/Comcast handling:
This is the STUPID way it currently INCORRECTLY works:
1. Your friend's caller id = "John Doe" (425) 777-1234
2.a. Xfinity/Comcast determines caller's caller id is accurate/legitimate.
2.b. Xfinity/Comcast changes caller id to "[V]John Doe" (425) 777-1234
3. You see "[V]John Doe" (425) 777-1234 and answer the phone because
the "[V]" added by Xfinity/Comcast tells you it hasn't been spoofed)
1. Scammer's SPOOFED caller id = "[V]Trust Me" (425) 666-6666
2.a. Xfinity/Comcast determines caller's caller-id has been SPOOFED!
2.b. Xfinity/Comcast does NOT prefix "[V]" to their caller id.
3. You see "[V]Trust Me" (425) 666-6666 on your phone's caller id
display and end up mistakenly believing the call is legitimate
and answer the call and end up talking to a SCAMMER!
This is the SMART way it SHOULD be fixed to work:
1. Scammer's SPOOFED caller id = "[V]Trust Me" (425) 666-6666
2.a. Xfinity/Comcast determines caller's caller-id has been SPOOFED!
2.b. Xfinity/Comcast adds "[SPOOFED!]" to their caller id.
3. You see "[SPOOFED!][V]Trust Me" (425) 666-6666 on your phone's caller
id display and due to the "[SPOOFED!]" in the caller id, know that
it is a scammer calling, so you don't answer it!
