I got a call this morning from the local "BBB" here in Montana. Well, that's already fishy to me as I have never owned a business, reported one or even had any sort of interaction with them what so ever. Anyway, the caller (clearly not a native English speaker) starts his spiel. He has a check for me that I need to claim... yeah, right... so he asks me a bunch of questions. Am I married? Do I work or am I retired? Do I have transportation? Where do I work? And this guy did his best to seem legit. Even calling me back after we " got disconnected" several times. But it sounded like they were going to send me a check. The guy never said where or who it's from either. My best guess is that it's a "overpayment" scam. Where they send you a counterfeit check for a amount of way more than they originally told you and ask you to send the "overpaid" amount back. The money never turns up cause the origin account didn't exist and you are out the REAL money you send them with no way to get it back.

Hello,

Our small, family-business received an email, from someone claiming to be with BBB, which I have copied and pasted here. Please do not follow the link as I believe it to be corrupt.

1. The reason I did not follow the link to view the complaint is that several things look off about this email. The ScamPulse.com operates from a dot org website and people emailing from BBB would probably use a dot org email address. So the email Ruth uses looks unofficial to me and in no relation to BBB [[email protected]]. I also checked our business health on BBB and found that we are such a small company that we do not even have a profile on the BBB website.

2. I also am skeptical of the type of file linked in the email. The link is a bit.ly link which is a notorious link used by scammers to shorten and hide the real URL link. This could be used to mask the scam link so it looks more benign.

3. In her message, Ruth does not discuss the actual complaint details at all. She insists that she is sending an automatic email because someone else has filed a complaint with BBB pertaining to a Fair Labor Standards Act violation. This notion is ridiculous and the fact that we must follow the link to get details is unconvincing.

4. In her "automatic" message, Ruth spells the word "complaint" correctly only the first time the word is used. Three subsequent uses of the word are misspelled as "compliant." If she were truly sending us an automatic, BBB email I think she would have proofread her own message so that each word were spelled properly.

5. If this is indeed an email from the ScamPulse.com, by all means let me know. I feel it is a phishing email from someone posing as the BBB and I hope the BBB warns people about this scam. Thank you for the opportunity to highlight this scam. It came through all my spam filters and landed directly in my inbox, so it may be a scam that people are seeing more of lately because spam filters haven't picked up on it yet. I hope this post helps others faced with the same scam to deduce its fraudulence.

Appears scammer is claiming to be the BBB and attempting to use scare tactics to garner a response from companies. Text is poorly drafted and lacks proper citations for the violations it is claiming.

I've received two emails from John L Hook at the above email address. The email says that the "BBB has got an abuse, claiming that your company is violating the Fair Labor Standards Act." That is highly improbable since I am my business and I don't employ anybody. There's a link to download a document. I don't download anything from anyone I don't know. Here's the full text of the email...

My first question is, "Why doesn't MR. Hook have a bbb.org email address?" Anyway, I'm left with two questions. 1. Has anyone lodged an employment complaint against Fluid Drive Media? and 2. is there anything I need to do, beyond notifying you, at this time?
