I was on the US Passport website and it said you could renew your passport online, so I clicked on that. I had to go through some steps to authenticate that I could proceed with renewing online and that went through. I was still under the impression that I was with the official US Passport service. Then I was given a fee of $88 once I filled in all the spaces for the renewal form. Shortly after, I never received a confirmation of my payment but I did receive a copy of the passport renewal form filled out in my email inbox.
