A worker from the company knocked on the door and offered to address tuck pointing problems with my fireplace chimney. The estimate was $5000. I was shocked but did want a cap installed on my furnace chimney. He backed off and said for $1500 he would deal with the worst tuck point problems and do the cap. He procured the $100 cap. He arrived and I cleared the day as I thought he would be here for a good portion of the day. 1 and 1/2 hours later, he knocked on the door and said he was done and asked for the check made out to an individual's name, Jamie Keet. That was an effective labor rate of $1000 per hour. I refused. I called Mr. Keet and complained that I did not even get $500 worth of work. I asked the worker and him how they calculated the bid. By the job is all they would offer. Time to do the work must part of how you bid I offered. No, just by the job. He offered to lower the bill to $1250. I offered $600 based generously on $100 per hour adding in time to go for the cap and travel time. I finally wrote a check made out to Mr. Keet for $1000. to get them out of my sight. Their card claimed they are licensed and bonded. I doubt it. There was no name on the truck, no license plate on the front. I walked to the back and took a picture. The plate was from Massachusetts, X15-535 with COMMERCIAL across the bottom. It had a piece of plastic over it to create reflection to impair visibility. I cannot see in the picture if the tag was current because of reflection from the plastic. I also saw no masonry tools or signs that motor had been mixed. I have not gone to the roof to see what he put in between the bricks but suspect some kind of caulk. The area he worked was no larger than 4 square feet.
