On December 1, 2024 I received a bill from American Family Care (AFC) Urgent Care for the amount of $550 for a COVID-19 test I took on December 13, 2020. A few things were suspicious about this bill. First, I had not received any bill between December 13, 2020 and December 1, 2024, yet, they were already threatening sending my bill to collections for failure to pay. Second, the website, www.saloojasinc.com, is full of punctual and grammatical errors and uses non-sensical explanations and reasoning in the FAQ section to explain why the bill might be high or why the math does not add up. Third, the phone number on the bill, 341-333-9171, is a wireless number that no one answers. Fourth, when I call the Urgent Care center they direct me to billing at 636-214-4377 which no one answers and you have to leave a voice message. Fifth, if you call the Urgent Care at 510-656-5700 and ask to speak to someone about this bill, no one is available. Lastly, and most importantly, my insurance provider, Kaiser, verified that the claim submitted to them by this office for my test and visit on December 13, 2020 was paid in full and I have no further obligation. I would like to believe this is an honest, clerical error, but the lack of transparency, the inability to get a hold of someone that can discuss my bill, the lack of information on the bill, and the fact that many people online have received similar bills under similar conditions for COVID tests, lead me to believe this is malicious and purposeful.
