In November 2023 I was trying to set up an anti-virus system on my laptop and I went to Google search to compare Norton with others. Comparing those I decided to go with Norton. Site looked very legitimate and I began filling out all personal info that these companies ask for when you sign up. After I filled out my part for one laptop, I tried to get to the second part to register my husband's computer but it wouldn't let me proceed to next page so I looked up phone number to call Norton for help. I called 877-694-2922 and the guy certainly sounded professional (great scammer) and he said he would help me navigate all. Had me go here and there in my settings and unfortunately was in the process gaining access to my laptop. After that he said since I wasn't happy with service so far he would help me obtain a refund but needed me to access my bank account so he could deposit refund!! Questioned why he couldn't just refund credit card and he said no-one anywhere in the world can do that and I could only get refund through my bank account. (Yes I did know better and still can't believe I did this!!) As soon as I logged into my account, he gained access and his mouse pointer took over. My screen went black except for a rectangular area which started saying "25% complete". Realizing he was gaining total access, I was able to somehow get out of my account but still had to run to my bank and totally close out that account number and open new one!!! He tried to call me back and the number said Buena Vista - 619-591-8791. I did not pick up and that was it. But I do see now that my info including SS number and birthdate are on the dark web.
