My experience today was almost exactly the same as the complaint from 76028. The only difference was I was trying to update the maps on my new RandMcNally GPS. It appears to me that I was scammed. I contacted my credit card company to stop payment on them charge.

I contacted Garmin on December 14, 2020 to see about updating my maps on my Garmin GPS. I was told to connect the GPS to my computer so that they could download the map update. The person I spoke to was Charles Smart. He asked to access my computer to download the update. After supposedly attempting to perform the download, I was told that my computer had a virus and it was preventing the download. He explained that I had several foreign IP addresses accessing my computer and that my Windows 10 software and virus protection has expired. He said my computer was at risk and asked if I would like to purchase the Windows 10 lifetime update for $399. I agreed, fearful that my computer was being hacked and my private information was accessible. He transferred me to a tech to install the Windows update. I was told that the download for the maps to my GPS would take about 30 minutes and I waited online. When he informed me it was completed, he gave me his contact information in case we had any problems. We left for Florida the next day for two weeks and could never get the GPS maps to work. Upon returning, I researched the Garmin website and the connection between them and the MySoft Squad and discovered it was a scam. I immediately contacted my bank to dispute the $399 charge. I was issued a temporary credit until such time that the bank could obtain more information.
