They called and said my computer had viruses and they wanted to help.

Phone number they called from: 1-786-600-1561

- Saint Charles, MO, USA

I received a call on my home phone from a person purporting to be micrsoft support. They said that they had found some errors on my computer during the microsoft automatic updates and that if i would let them have remote access they could correct the problems. He directed me to a wesite to access the remote access sign in. I typed in the information that he gave me to allow them into my computer. Once in my computer, i could tell he had control because my mouse was moving about the screen. He pointed out a couple of things and then tryed to sell me support warranty for $20.00. I offered to use my visa account, but he did not want to use that, instead he wanted me to give him my routing number from my checking account. At that point I told him that i did not trust him at least three times and that i would have to call Micrsoft to verify this support call. While looking for the number to call he gave me two numbers to call and his employee ID number. I called the one number on my cell phone and was awnsered as Micrsoft Support. I asked about the call and gave them the employee ID number and they verifed that he was indeed an employee on a support call. After handing up, i told the person that i still did not trust them, my mouse started moving about my computer and suddenly a screen popped up for a password. He said that you computer has been locked and that you want be able to do any work now. I hung up on him, and called Microsoft Support and they connected me to the Microsoft store at the St. Louis galleria. They had me bring my computer tower out to them and i did. They could not unlock the computer and i left it with them for 3 or 4 days. They said the they had to clean the hard drive and re-install Windows 7. If i had not had a backup on a USB drive i would have lost all my information, files, spreadsheets and AutoCAD drawings and files, family pictures and music. It cost me 150.00 at Micrsoft Support at the galleria to reinstall the software. After i got the tower back home it took me and additional week to reinstall all of my programs.

I called Mike Rush at News Channel 5 and he did a story on the scam and it aired on channel 5 news in early January and throughout the month.

The phone call i received came out of Junction City, Kentucky. After the incident, they called back the following day to try an get my routing number and unlock my computer. At that point, i just hung up on them.

Microsoft Support said they would never call on a support call and to never let someone have remote acces to your computer unless you call them and know who you are talking to.
