I was called by someone claiming to be a Jefferson County Sheriff, following up on my non-appearance in court yesterday. He said a subpoena had been issued and signed for on July 1. The judge, the Hon Herb Mayes had issued 2 citations, SRU007724 (failure to appear) and SRU006923 (contempt of court). I was offered a choice of civil or criminal defense; if civil I had to post a $6000 cash bond and show up in court at 600 West Jefferson St, rm 3012 on Tuesday Aug 19 at 10am. Then number they called from appeared to be that of the Sheriff's office (502) 574-5400, before they switched back to their own line. They said they had to track me until I had paid the bond and wanted me to keep the phone line open. I did call the sheriff's office to check on these names and was told that these were the names of actual retired sheriffs, and that this was a scam by people using their names. The names given were Randy Hogan (ID# 800256) and Lieutenant Joe Lannan (ID# 07612). The Sheriff's office did check and there was no warrant for me. One of the scammers called me once more to check my progress, but I informed them I had checked with the sheriff's office and had been told this was a scam. I have not heard back since. I did not lose money.
