Email sent to me from someone pretending to be the general manager of a real VW car dealership that I’ve visited. His claim was that my 8.5 year old car is about to run out of factory warranty and I need more coverage! The email contained my correct year, make, and model. Red flags: 1.) general managers don’t email customers about warranty extensions. It’s a ploy to get you to feel more pressure from someone “important.” 2.) The sender’s email address is a generic “email@email…” type account. 3.) The phone number is an 844 prefix which isn’t local. When you call the number, it’s for the “vehicle care center” as the robot voice explains. Too generic. Their call center has “normal” business hours given it an air of legitimacy, plus you can even leave them a voicemail! How kind! 4.) The format and details of the initial email can make it seem real at a quick glance, but reading the details begs lots of questions and quickly opens it up to scrutiny.
