Type of a scam: Phishing

Searched web for United Airlines and this site came up. On phone asked if this were United and was assured it was, ultimately found it was not. Representative informed me that we had to pay an extra $178 to confirm two tickets on the next day flight out from Jacksonville to Newark because we did not confirm in time. He told us we lost our seats and needed to pay this money to get back on flight. This call was at 6:45 pm the night prior to our flight at apprx 1 pm the next day. When I balked at the amount, I was put on hold and was then told he could reduce it to $150. We were told the cost of fuel goes up every minute and that is why we needed to pay this money since we did not confirm our tickets in time. We were sent an advice with all the flight info including new seats and we had to confirm payment from our United credit card ( which I gave him the # because we were desparate to get on this flight - also provided our United reservation number and our names - big mistake on my part).

My wife called the real United on her phone while I was attempting to confirm via what we later found out was Cheap Fare Expert, number 1-888-916-4697 the reps initials are AJ.

When the e-mail to authorize payment from our credit card arrived, I refused to provide authorization, even after once again questionning if AJ were employed by United which he confirmed. I concluded the call upset and frustrated that this I was being scammed.

My wife then confirmed with United by phone that our seats were still available on our flight and were assured all was in order for the next day.

When we arrived at the airport at noon the next day, our seats were not available and we were not on the flight because someone cancelled out flight via the internet the night prior, after we confirmed via phone at around 7 pm.

We called Cheap Fare Experts to complain and were told AJ did not cancel our flight despite the fact he had all the pertinent information to do so.

We missed out flight, missed the next flight which we were on standby for. Flew out at 9:30 and got home at 1:30 in the morning, Needless to say we missed our preplanned important engagement which we would have made if we left on our original flight as confirmed by United the night prior.

When I called back twice to the Cheap Fare Expert line at 1-888-916-4697 they refused to give me the name of the company and their website has the United logo on it. Understand they are a consortium for United. This company representative lied to me throughout the entire call. The company was intentionally deceptive and in my estimation unethical.

Crazy to think United would give this company access to sell and service tickets for their airline.

Would recommend anyone dealing with this company to proceed with caution .
