My mother, ***** ******g, lives with us. I am ******* ******* *******. She received 2 brand new Samsung phones she did not order on Thursday, 3/13/2025. Each was in its own box, delivered at the same time by UPS, shipped from Samsung. Her name, our address, and her old land line from her previous home (number inactive for more than 3 years) were on the boxes. I was home and picked the boxes up off our porch immediately after they were delivered. We called Samsung and they confirmed the phones were ordered online earlier this week. Two accounts were opened in my mother’s name and each had a different email address that is not my mother’s email address and that we do not have access to. Samsung didn’t tell us what those email addresses are, just that they do not match my mother’s. Per the packing lists, one phone was associated with a Verizon account and the second with an AT&T account. We called Verizon, who is our carrier, and spoke to their Fraud Dept. They confirmed that earlier this week a new account was established using my mother’s name, our address, and her social security number, financing one of the Samsung phones. Verizon locked the account and marked it for fraud. We still need to file a fraud report with them but are waiting for a copy of the police report my mother filed on the 13th. We have returned both phones to Samsung and they have also marked the two accounts in my mother’s name as fraud. My mother called AT&T Friday, March 14, but they would not connect her with a fraud department and said they did not have an account in her name. We are not confident that there isn’t something set up at AT&T in my mom’s name or using her social security number, but AT&T were not at all helpful. Samsung said that when they get the phones back, they will notify both Verizon and AT&T that those phones are returned and the orders were fraudulent. We suppose that someone intended to pick up the packages off our porch before we saw them. Fortunately we got to the phones first. We have checked all bank and card accounts and my mother has not been charged for the phones. The identity thieves were apparently financing the phones through Verizon and AT&T. I set up a LifeLock account for my mother Thursday night and placed freezes on everything to ensure this doesn’t happen again to her.
