Asking the person answering the phone if they can hear the caller

Recorded call. After answering hello, the voice on the end said: "Hello, this is John. Can you hear me?" Responded yes, reflexively, and the call went into a solicitation pitch about internet security systems.

Hung up.

- Lawrenceville, GA, USA

I received a call from 678-534-5862. The caller said "Hi this is John from American Home Security. Can you hear me okay?". I believe it may have been a recording, but I'm not 100% sure. I hung up immediately.

- Atlanta, GA, USA

Male voice announcing they were calling from customer service and asked if I could hear them. When I said "yes" they announced something about congratulations on my cruise and I hung up.

- Kennesaw, GA, USA

Received a call today from 678-534-5862. The voice said, "Can you here me?" I said "yes". I realized it was a recording about home security and I hung up. Also received a suspicious call two minutes later from 770-426-5400. Second person had a heavy accent and used profanity.

- Clarks Hill, SC, USA

She asked me if I could hear her when I said yeah and said she was having trouble with her headset the went on to say that we've stayed at one of their resort and something about 75% off and I hung up by then.

- Villa Rica, GA, USA

I fell for the "Can you hear me ok?" Scam. I said "Yes but I'm not interested" and hung up.

- Smyrna, GA, USA

I received a call from someone I didn't know, but had been waiting on calls so I answered it. The "man" asked me if I could hear him, I said, yes, and he continued on to tell me about a home security system he was offering. I hung up the phone at that point, but after seeing the reports on this type of activity, I'm afraid my 'yes' was enough to make me a victim.

- Roswell, GA, USA

Voice asked "Can you hear me?" and I answered "yes" and then was transferred to a free vacation offer. I then hung up.

- Statham, GA, USA

"Hello can you hear me" sorry my headset messed up.

- Lithonia, GA, USA

A number I did not recognize called from a Georgia area code. I am currently looking for a job, so I answered thinking it might be a recruiter. There was an automated person saying "Hello?" I responded "Yes" and they laughed saying "oh I'm so sorry about that I was adjusting my headset." At that moment I realized it sounded recorded and hung up. I am not sure but think this might be a new version of the "Can you hear me?" Phone scam. No money taken as of yet but this just happened.

- Lawrenceville, GA, USA

Said it was John from some company, asked if I could hear him, accidentally said yes but immediately remembered I was told to say no if I ever received one of these calls, so I immediately said no and hung up the phone

- Dahlonega, GA, USA

Today, 02/01/2017 at 3:43 pm, I received a call from a person who stated, "this is Jason from customer service. Can you hear me okay?" I did not respond and I hung up the phone. At 3:47pm I tried calling the number back. I received a pre-recorded message that stated thank you for participating in our survey and hung up. There was never any business name ever given at any time during either phone call. The caller i.d. on my phone showed the call came from Augusta, GA.

- Aiken, SC, USA

Caller asked "can you hear me?" upon answering in an attempt to get the victim to say "yes" to record for future money theft or to use to charge things in the victims name. That is what I believe was the reason for the call because of an article posted on the news describing the exact call I received. The call was a recording of a woman saying that the victim won a free stay at a resort and a cruise. I can't remember what I may have said at the beginning of the call because at the time I was not aware of the scam. After realizing it was a scam I hung up the phone without saying anything.

- Alpharetta, GA, USA

Started a question. Can you hear me? I answered YES ... not aware of scam that has been reported

I hung up

Keep receiving a call from this number and lady acts like she is dropping her head set. I hang up after that.

- Atlanta, GA, USA

They asked if I work for current company and verify my date of birth.

- Prescott Valley, AZ, USA

2017-01-30, 7:54 p.m. Received call from (928) 433-4997 with Caller ID showing "Flagstaff AZ." The call was a recording, but the recorded script pretended to be a live person, saying something to the effect of "oh, I dropped my headset" or "sorry; I was having trouble with my headset" and at some point during that initial greeting asked if she could be heard. It was not initially evident that it was a recording; the recorded 'caller' was speaking so quickly that there was no polite opportunity to interrupt and it was about 20 seconds into the call before it was clear that it was a recording. The pitch of the 'caller' was that because I supposedly had purchased their products in the past, I was now eligible for this new fantastic offer, etc., etc. I hung up as soon as I realized it was a recording, but I believe that at the very beginning of the call I was asked if I could hear and I probably answered "yes" before I realized it was not a liver person. I assume that the entire purpose of the call was to get a voice recording of me saying the one word "yes."

- Marietta, GA, USA
