Total money lost $70,000
Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

My mother (80) received info from a friend on Facebook that said she received a lot of money after making an initial investment. My mother thought since her friend has won, maybe she would as well.

"They" indeed said she was a lucky winner and that if she gave them a certain amount, she would receive a "package" with more than her initial investment. This started out back in Nov. 2017. Since then, they have received over $40,000+ in ITunes cards and an additional $30,000+ in Western Union and TD Bank Deposits. They requested her account information, (which she provided) and a copy of her credit card (also provided).

To date, they are still texting her stating if she makes one last payment, she will get her "package". They have even tried scaring her by sending her pictures of her house (which we, my sister and I know they were taken from Google maps). My sister went to put a fraud alert on the account from TD Bank, and they (the scammers) know this was done.

We have all the paperwork, information, on where the money was sent, receipts, account number, names but it is all on her cell phone in text form and I have tried endlessly to retrieve with no luck.

Since they are still contacting her, I am afraid they will try to harm her in some sort of a way. Please reach out to me as soon as you can, I am very afraid for her since she lives alone and we now feel she has cognitive issues with how she trusts. Thank you!. I have attached a copy of what I have sent to the FBI.

Type of a scam Government Grant

Happened two different times, two nights in a row. I received Messenger invitations from friends on my Facebook account. I keep my Facebook security level where only my FB friends can see my information, photos or posts. My two friends did not. I clicked on their invitations to chat on Messenger (forgetting that they had already connected with me on Messenger a few years ago). This happened late in the evening local time, about 11:00 PM on both occasions. Both times the message started with "Hello. How are you doing?" I and then launched into a long message like "Have you heard about the new federal grant to help people with disabilities, old people, sick people, people with mortgages.." etc. etc., and then went on about this $75,000.00 available for free (yep, I knew for sure then) that you do not have to pay back. You just require the messenger's assistance to obtain this money the very next day by special delivery. LOL. Mr. such and such will assist you. That's as far as I let it go, but I am sure the next step would have been to send this Mr. such and such a money order or check, or give him your bank account details. I ended the first conversation at that point and reported it to Facebook via the app. the next night, I knew what was going on and so I immediately asked my "friend" what my maiden name is (the real friend would have known this) and the messenger blocked me. I again reported the incident to Facebook. Both my real friends had their Facebook security set on "Public", which means anyone can view and copy their profile picture and their exact name and create a duplicate account pretending to be the real friends. They then send all the friends of the person's profile that they copied a Messenger invitation (and they can view all the friends of anyone who's FB security is set to "Public". Their invitation shows up with your real friend's photo and everything, so it is easy to think it is your friend the first time it happens. I believe this is what happened. I guess it is the latest scam to come from Nigeria (Facebook later let me know the first caller had logged into Messenger from a phone in Nigeria). As mentioned above, my FB account security is set to where only my friends can view my details. To do this, open up your FB account and go to your profile. Select 'Settings and Privacy' and scroll down to 'Privacy', then 'Privacy Settings'. this is where you control who can see your posts and contents. Open up each link on this page and make sure you choose settings that make sure only your FB friends can view your account, all the way through to 'Who can see your friends list?' and set that to 'only me'. T took screen shots of the conversations and posted them here and on FB also. I covered the name and profile picture of my FB friend.

It is completely free and no obligation, the report is emailed to you to review at your leisure.I can actually send you pictures of your roof so you may know the current condition of your roof all I need I confirmation your home address and an email where I can send you the report. In regards to an inspection since we will be flying a drone over your home and emailing report and someone would call to follow up, you don't necessarily need to be home however if you wish to meet with us we defiantly work around your schedule."

I've received two voicemails in the past week from 2 different numbers (I never answer calls from numbers I'm not familiar with) with one message stating "do not disregard this message and do return the call now if you don't return the call and I don't hear from your attorney either then the only thing I can do is wish you good luck as the situation unfolds on you goodbye" from this number AND

another number (516) 442-9978 left a message stating "???? your name at this moment we would request that you get back to us so we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 585-633-0398"

I haven't received anything in the mail indicating that I'm in any legal trouble and honestly don't know why I would be. I'm assuming that written notification would be required in order to take any action against me.

Answered the phone and when asked if I was Mrs ...., I said yes and they hung up. I should have realized it but caught me at a very bad time in my life/day. so frustrated with walking to the phone only to have unknown people calling. If it wasn't for a pacemaker needing a landline, we would not have one.

Type of a scam Government Grant

They told me I was chosen for a $9,200 government grant. Told me to go to a store and buy $200 in Google Play gift cards and read them the numbers on the back in order to activate the grant. Then told me the amount went up to $10,500 and all I would need to do would be to purchase $400 more in either google play or iTunes to pay for a few, cannot think of the exact words he used. Then another $800 to increase my credit score so the, I am having a hard time remembering what he said about who he was apparently emailing. This whole time telling me that this grant is being raised and how lucky I am. The “grant” got up to 12,000$ and then finally he told me that he received an email saying that I was receiving a $40,000 grant, only 20 out of 3000 and only 3 people in Minnesota were lucky enough to get it. Then told me all he need me to do was get 2,000$ more to get the insurance so they could deposit into my account and send me a check without people thinking I did something illegal.

Woman calling. Very rude and threatening to prosecute, garnish wages if debt is not paid. Calls from a restricted number but leaves 346-299-2016 as a call back number. Tracked the phone number to Houston, TX.

Type of a scam Credit Cards

I've gotten calls from this number multiple times. They start with an automated message about 'my credit card account.' I asked two or three times to remove me and they immediately hang up on me. Today, they harassed me.

I kindly asked for them to remove me and mid-sentence, the guy said "[censored] OFF!" and I politely said "I'm sorry?" And he said "[censored] OFF!" and then he hung up.

Type of a scam Tax Collection

I received a bad phone recording about the IRS, but the number to call was clear. They claimed I hadn't filed my taxes properly for the last five years, and owed $7250 plus fees. I needed to make arraignments for a tax payment voucher or a warrant would be issued for my arrest and spend five years in prison. The man's name was Steve GS773910, they knew my age and of course the phone number. The background noise sounded like a call center and their accents sounded like they were from India.

Type of a scam Tax Collection

I did not answer this call, and an automated message was left on my answering machine. The message said that the IRS has issued a warrant for my arrest and that I needed to call this number (832-734-9933) immediately. There was static on the message so I could not tell whether the message included a company name. I am very concerned about what will happen if unsuspecting people pick up the phone when these people call. I assume if I had picked up the phone, I would have been asked for personal information and/or money.

Type of a scam Debt Collections

I can only assume this is supposed to be a debt collection. It is a garbled message with number 57648961 (partial return phone number?) and a file number of 655528 relayed in message. The internet warns us not to call back. If I answer yes to any communication it could be used to show that I complied/agreed with something they said, even if there was no real conversation. Original phone number was 720-580-8801 (Keenesburg, Co?).I do not call numbers I do not recognize, and the fact that information left on VM was unintelligible and incomplete makes this scary. Harassment call.Within 15 minutes I received a second call from another number 303-479-7595. No message, but most likely the same source.
