Getting calls multiple times day and night as part of a ‘one ring’ phone scam. The FCC said the point isn’t to get you to answer, it’s to get you to call back.

The charges come from connecting to a premium number overseas and show up on your phone bill. There is a connection fee of around $20 and a $9 per minute charge.

Here are some tips what to do if you get the call:

- If you get a call from a number you don’t recognize, don’t pick up.

- The FCC says before calling unfamiliar numbers make sure the area code isn’t international.

- If you don’t make international calls, you can ask your wireless provider to block outgoing international calls.

- Report scams to BBB.org/scamtracker.

I got involved chatting online with a woman who claimed to be from Wyoming. She said she was an only child & her late father had a gold inheritance in Nigeria. She needed a next of kin to help her get the money. She talked me into helping her as she seemed kind & honest. She claimed to be a Christian in belief. She got me in contact with a supposed lawyer who needed money in the form of wiring money. After 2 months & a lot of money later to try to switch the address of shipping the gold, I figured it out. The lawyer then kept emailing me then calling and texting me. Lawyer claimed the FBI was contacted then I got an email from a fake FBI agent account from a Gmail address. The fake agent threatened me & my family. I am still missing the money.

We receive a phone call and the person said her first name. She the ask twice if I could hear her which I replied “yes”. She then asked if we received a notice on the change in utility policy. I answered “no”. She then abruptly hung up.

This is very suspicious. When I tried to call back on that number repeatedly, all I received was a busy signal. The caller I’d phone number again was 808 666 9222.

- Avon, OH, USA

I've received several calls claiming a company is no longer in business and that I am due a refund. I called the number but was provided no details other than I was owed money. I provided them no information and ended the call.

My 94 year old mother received a call saying she needed to pay $200 or her prescriptions will be cancelled. She did not pay and instead spoke with me, her adult son. She does not get prescriptions from any source other than her local Walgreens.

- Lynnwood, WA, USA

A contractor contacted me via phone and left a message to say he had just missed a call from me. I replied via text that I had not called him. He sent a screenshot of his phone log with my number having called him. I responded with a screenshot of my recent calls - there was only the one call back from him on my log, and no record on my phone that I called him. We both agreed this was worrisome and should be reported. I am worried someone out there is calling contractors using my phone number!!

- West Chester, PA, USA

I answered my cellphone and the caller immediately said "you are on a recorded line, can you hear me". I instinctively answered "yes". I had heard about a scam using this technique and I hung up. I did hear the caller say something about a Caribbean cruise.

- Palm Harbor, FL, USA

I received a phone call from someone claiming to be a job recruiter. The recruiter claimed to be named Carmen. My iPhone indicated that the phone number was from St. Petersburg, Florida. When they mentioned the career center name there was a skip in the call for a beat, meaning the line seemed to go out for half a second as their company name was supposedly given. I was asked generic job recruiting questions and casually gave out information concerning my first and last name, my e-mail address, and my phone number. It was not until 6 minutes into the phone call that I realized I had been talking to a machine. When I asked "Carmen" to repeat a question it did with exactly the same cadence, and then I realized someone was on the other end selecting voice commands. When I became suspicious, I tried to ask it a specific question. By this point I had heard several voice commands repeated enough times to recognize it was a machine. I eventually became confrontational and asked if I was speaking with a human and then the line cut out. I tried calling the number back but this time it was a male voice. I realized it was also a machine. I tried calling back several other times and was given a machine that asked me to press 1 to be put on their Do Not Call list, or to press 2 to inquire about more information about the company (the machine never once mentioned the name of the company), and it mentioned the following e-mail address: [email protected]

Unfortunately this is all the information that I have but thank you for your time.
