Got a call. "Angel" from the "Tax Group". It was obviously a scam but I occasionally moonlight as a scambaiter so I baited whatever info I could out of them. "Angel" was clearly a pre-recorded message so I just followed the instructions to get through to someone. The man I got through to had an eastern accent, probably Indian or one of the surrounding countries. They claimed to be from LA, working for a group which does what I would describe as tax auditing. They claimed I had "over $400" (no specific figure given) in back taxes which I had not paid. Obviously this is all the job of the I.R.S., and they'd never do something like call and demand $400 in this way. The phone number was *probably* spoofed but it's possible it wasn't so I included it anyway earlier. That's all the information I managed to get out of them before something spooked them and they hung up.

I had received a letter in the mail in which I had thought it would be about the People's First Initiative from the IRS in which it helps those affected by COVID-19. I had called the number on the paper in which a man answered and said their name was Tax Group. They took down my name, address, SSN, phone number, email, how much is in my checking account (but not the actual account number or what bank), my occupation, and how many kids I have. They had said that they are lawyers who help to get the desired amount, in which I was confused. I had led them to believe I had hardly anything in my account anyway, but they were pressuring me to even take $100. I had said no and hung up. Shortly thereafter I had called them again asking them where they are located in which I was threatened. This is definitely a scam and I hope they are arrested and served with justice.

I received an unsolicited letter with "Urgent Documentation Third Notice" written on the outside of the envelope. The letter goes on to describe an alleged tax lien (of which I have none), and they allege that they can "PROTECT [my] money and paycheck before the State Taxing Authority comes and takes it". They propose an estimated settlement amount of $501.39. I called the number provided (as no address, website or email site was provided) and spoke with someone named Michael. He would no provided any further address of demographic information and subsequently hung up on me.
