Summary of Events:
On April 23, 2025, I received and accepted a quote of $350 from Reliable Relocators Moving & Storage for a small move of bedroom furniture from my home in Apopka, FL to my sister's home Altamonte Springs, FL. The move was scheduled for May 3, 2025. I paid a $150 deposit by credit card to secure the date.
The items being moved included:
• 1 king headboard, footboard, side rails
• King mattress and 2 box springs
• 2 nightstands
• 1 long dresser with mirror
• A few boxes of personal/sentimental items
On the morning of May 3rd, the movers arrived over an hour late. The lead mover, Paul Thompson, handed me a lengthy contract (~10 pages) and stated that I had to pay $105 in cash before they would begin work. He asked me to sign or initial each page without reviewing it in detail, which I did under the assumption that this was standard procedure and in agreement with the $350 quote.
Once the furniture was fully loaded onto the truck, they locked the truck and refused to proceed until the balance of the job was paid. I believed this balance to be the remainder of the $350. However, I was informed by a woman from their office (who later texted me from 305-********) that the new total was $2,136.71, leaving a balance due of $1,881.71.
I did not receive this updated "invoice" via email as claimed. It was only sent via text after I called to complain. I protested immediately, stating I had not agreed to these fees. She responded that I signed the contract and would need to pay or the movers would take the furniture to storage and begin charging $250 per day.
My sister, ultimately agreed to pay to avoid losing the items, which are worth an estimated $4,000–$5,000, plus contained sentimental contents. The movers demanded payment in full in cash before they would unload. They followed us to the Altamonte Springs address and would not begin unloading until my sister handed over $1,882 in cash.
Despite repeated requests, they refused to provide a formal receipt. I had to demand a handwritten receipt from Paul, who only complied after being pressured repeatedly. I also took pictures of the movers, their truck, and the license plate (FL tag *** ***, which appeared to be expired as of 12/24).
Due to the nature of the deception and coercion used to extort additional money under duress, I will also be filing a police report with the Apopka Police Department to formally document the incident and support any criminal or civil investigations.
In the course of further research, I discovered that the individual associated with this scam — believed to be Shawn Thompson — has been named in multiple public online reviews and consumer complaints. A simple search of "Shawn Thompson Scam Florida" yields numerous warning posts, scam alerts, and even legal judgments tied to similar moving fraud incidents. These findings suggest this is not an isolated case but part of a pattern of repeat fraudulent behavior that has targeted multiple Florida consumers.
