I applied for a job on Handshake, I received a message on the app to send an email to start communication about the job. Everything seemed extremely legit, they had a website up and running, it was a local company, they had me fill out a form for a background check and said they’d get back to me in a few days. I looked up the person who I’d been emailing on IG, same field, same city, we even had some friends in common. He got back to me and said I’d been offered a job, had a really comprehensive package of employment documents, benefit overview etc.

I filled out one form but said I was going to wait on the direct deposit form (because I didn’t want to give out financial information), but he said it was necessary for my onboarding profile. After I sent it, I was suspicious. I tried to delve further into the website but most links were unclickable. I went back to the jobs app but the posting and all communications were gone.
