National Residential Improvement Association Reports & Reviews (4)

I was contacted to use a government grant for home improvement. After researching, I realized it was a scam.

Large post card mailer suggesting they "provide assistance with government sponsored home improvement programs including grants, tax credits, economic stimulus benefits and low interest government loans as well as known local incentives offered by your city of state of residence, Regional NRIA Authorized Contractors provide all labor, materials and warranties based upon qualifications and eligibility requirements for these programs." And "Most homeowners qualify for one or more of the following programs:..."

website is a .org

highlighted is the Processing applications and Free assistance. "No postage needed" response card attached.

My first giveaway: addressed to "Resident"

I fear many senior citizens and unwitting at-risk individuals will fall prey to this ploy under the guise of official government assistance.

Two addresses and phone numbers listed:

PBM 115, 125 Herman Melville Avenue, Newport News, VA 23606.

NRIA, PO BOX 597, Dunmore PA 18512-9954

Mail "offer" to find out about programs available in my area (12525) for home improvements at no cost to homeowner. Mail addressed to "Resident" at my street address, so definitely targeted by area.

On NRIA.org, no programs are listed for my state, so seems like a way to get me to submit identifying information to solicitor.

Official looking postcard type mailing with a listing of programs: Section 504 Home Repair Loan and Grants, Energy Efficient Mortgage Program Tax Credit(s), HECM Program for Senior Citizens, Government Insured Loan(s), etc.

When doing home repairs, any reasonable person should hire local who can provide references and be willing to back up their reputation. Many people think someone is going to do that challenging work for them on the up and up? The filter questions they ask, you know they are phishing for information about your personal situation. Such as: (a) Household Income at this adress if above or below local median income (b) if your home located in a declared disaster area, (c) my credit rating is poor, fair, or good, (d) age categories for homeowner.

Post card style references FORM STD1801 (which is a fancy reference to date that the postcard was designed. Mailing address for this postcard is Pennsylvania, yet the home address is Virginia. All so weird.
