Motown Group Marketing Reports & Reviews (15)

This company is a scam. You drive all around the metro Detroit area, wasting your gas for which you are not reimbursed, walking door to door, trying to convince unsuspecting people to switch their gas from DTE to Consumers Energy. The pay rate is nowhere near what is advertised in job listings. You wear business attire in the morning and then have to change into regular street clothing to beat the pavement knocking on doors. Then the “better” you get, you then get to train other new recruits to do the same thing, & your title is changed to a higher status, but you’re still doing the same work. I left in the middle of my second day because I realized this company is BS. The management should be ashamed of themselves. They’re taking advantage of young people who don’t know any better. A multi level marketing Ponzi scheme.

Same story as all of the above. 2 rounds of interviews on back to back days with a job offer the day after. That alone should tell you enough. Throughout the interview process they tell you about this glorious business opportunity and cite growth as the main reason. In reality they are involved in multi level marketing for companies such as Quill and AT&T. They sell subscription services and phone plans to small family businesses. You essentially just go do door to door sales in random locations around Southeast Michigan and receive no compensation for gas or mileage. Most of the businesses are often uninterested and it is celebrated to get 3-4 sales a day after visiting over 60 places. The office they lease out of is decent. The people seemed like genuinely good people, but they lie to people on their job postings. The job posting I applied to said word for word, “there will be no cold calling and no door to door sales as proven in the picture below. If you are in a position where you want sales experience then go for it. Do not think for a second that it is anything else though. They post multiple job descriptions such as “sales representative” or “account manager” but they’re all the same thing, door to door salesmen. Have a very uptight dress code that is not caught up to modern times and makes their customers uncomfortable. The team building events they talk about do happen but you’d have to stick with the company for over a year to get any of the real R&R they boast about. The work hours are 8:30 to 5, but really it’s 8 to 6 or later as you stop approaching businesses at 5 then have to drive back home or to the office if your partner drove. The training is somewhat remedial and unnecessary for the work they are trying to accomplish. Anyone with a degree from a top 200 university doesn’t need training to do what they are doing and could definitely find a better internship or job. They do have multiple salary options that include commission and salaries. All in all if you want to work in door to door sales then go ahead and apply, but that’s all you will be doing.

Run! Do not go anywhere near this place. My daughter was offered a "marketing internship" position and she was very excited, thinking it was legitimate. No, it is a sales position with a moving target. They hire unaware college students and make them drive to very distant locations without any reimbursement for gas. They make them work from 8:30 to 6:00 everyday and there is no set compensation. They are told they will earn 400 to 600 dollars weekly plus commission percentage, but so far, there has been no payment of wages. We are looking into filing a complaint with the Attorney General's office. They are preying on college students who really want to get their first marketing job. This is not it. Horrible company! They should be ashamed of themselves for what they are doing.

Stay far away from this place. They are very pushy here and make it sound like a great place, but they are very unprofessional and unorganized. I applied and hours later got a phone call which I didn’t have my phone in me at the time and they left a voicemail demanding I call back and the same thing with the next day. Again, I didn’t have my phone on me and they demanded I call back immediately and even texted and emailed me. I reached out and was offered a zoom interview the very next day and at the end of the interview they wanted me to have an in person meeting the very next day which I did not do. I then was offered the job and I was suppose to start my remote position. I was told to buy all this stuff and to download all of this stuff onto my computer by a certain date. I got everything I needed and the job start date ended getting pushed back a week not once but three times. The first two times I reached out asking if we were still starting the specified dates and they said “I thought I emailed you saying next week instead as there are still some things I’m finishing up.” When the third time came around to start I did not reach out to see if they would, but nothing. Stay far from this place they will do nothing but waste your time and money based on my personal experience with them.

Hi Geoff, I would like to correct a few things about your review. First of all, you were never offered an in-person interview as this is a fully remote position and you do not live in the same state as your interviewer. Secondly, although the start date was pushed back (which was the fault of the client), you were kept fully in the loop via email and several voicemails. Thirdly, the orientation was held on Friday, June 11, and the first day of training was June 14. If you did not follow up because you could not wait for the start date, that is your decision, but it does not make the program a scam.

I initially applied to this job posting through the website www.handshake.com. I was immediately contacted through email about the position only being for people in the metropolitan Michigan area. I replied back that I assumed that it was a remote position and if they have a remote position, I would be greatly interested in it. I was then called by the hiring manager, Trevor Smith, the following day and he hired me on the spot the following Monday, May 24th after one interview. He then asked for my social security and driver's license through a very unprofessionally templated document. I send it to him because I assumed this was a real job and a part of their "on boarding process". My skepticism arose when I realized their unprofessionalism such as failing to provide adequate details such as the times and start dates of training. It was first June 7th to then June 14th, and an orientation was supposed to happen on June 11th, but it never did. Upon further research and speculation, the website www.scampulse.com provided very negative reviews of the company. For the employees who has the misfortune of working for them in Michigan, they are essentially a door to door business selling random services. That is the complete opposite of a marketing company. They have operated under numerous names such as Team Michigan Group, MI Brand, Capital Michigan, Detroit Business Consulting, Wayne Marketing Enterprises, Frontier Promotions, and Hockeytown Marketing. I looked up all those names and they all have the same address as Motown Group Marketing with the phrase "permanently closed" on Google. Furthermore, Trevor Smith kept bragging about his work, when in actuality his LinkedIn says otherwise. He is also a part of another scam company called Frontier Promotions, and he even has his job title as Account Manager of Wayne Marketing Enterprises. Essentially, my fear is that I was a "remote worker" and their plans for me would include exploiting my Social Security # to open up loans to further progress this scam.

For someone who doesn't work for Motown Group, ME48843 sure does know some extremely specific information about the posts they commented on...

Hi there. I do not work for Motown Group and never have, but I have some corrections for you as well. The orientation did in fact take place on June 11, and training began June 14 as specified. There is documentation to prove this. In addition, posting that a company plans to use your social security number to open false loans is a very serious claim and we would be open to discussing this more with you to dissuade any fears. And lastly, posting a negative review using someone’s full name on the internet not because they did anything wrong but because you did not care for the way they spoke is also what some people would consider unsafe and unprofessional.

My recently graduated daughter interviewed for this company last week and it was exactly as stated above...immediate call, interview following morning, job offer hours later, start date next day. This just didn't sit well with my husband and I so I am grateful to the individuals here who reported their experiences. My take on it is this is a catfishing company. Interviewer acted like she was my daughters best friend. Common interests. Promises of sending her to "really nice places". Some local driving. No mention of gas reimbursement. Commission-based pay and recruiting others were our red flags. Did not send her to college to work on commission and for us to pay for her gas (since she would not be able to afford it on this job). We advised her to not show up and block any calls.

Joined Motown Group Marketing beginning of May and thought they did presentations for actual businesses but it turns out they do door to door. They make you drive out far and wide, their office is based in Troy MI and I've seen some people drive out to Flint, Ann Arbor and New Baltimore. They have you try to sign up or sell various products and services to people in door to door businesses. When I started office was outsourced to a company called Energy Sage and then they randomly switched to United Breast Cancer Foundation. Just was really bad after a while because I wasn't making money and ended up losing money on gas and food plus working 10-11 hour days with sometimes no outcome on commission. I left in my third week and they still haven't paid me what they owe me for training. They expect you to pitch any type of business in your territory to get closes on sales but it just felt like harrassment on the business owner's end. They also changed their name three times in under 3 years because they feel it is "better advertising for business" but in reality it's posts like these that expose them. They say create a problem for the customer and solve it for them within a matter of 30 seconds but that doesn't feel right.

I’m wondering if you ever got the compensation you deserved. My son is having the same issue. Thanks

Some important details I forgot to mention was is that they claim they are registered with Better Business Beureau but you can't even find them on BBB.org. Another thing I forgot to mention is that they went under the names Wayne Marketing Enterprises and Hockey Town Marketing but you should look into those names for yourself.

Stay far away from this company. They only pay commission and force you to work 10+ hour days selling stuff to businesses. All of their different job listings? You all end up doing the same thing, going door to door trying to sell this or that program. The company is essentially a barely legal pyramid scheme.

I wanted to add that I never got paid for any of the work I did (it’s been several weeks since I left) and that I have a list of previous names the company has gone by since maybe 2016 or 2017: Motown Group Marketing, Team Michigan Group, MI Brand, Capital Michigan, Detroit Business Consulting, Wayne Marketing Enterprises, Frontier Promotions, and Hockeytown Marketing. They are a part of Credico; look up Credico if you’re curious about what that means.

I was recruited by Motown Group Marketing on Zip Recruiter. Red Flag #1 I was immediately called minutes after applying. Red Flag #2 Zoom interview with immediate in person interview the next morning. Red Flag #3 Office building was semi-vacant and directory did not include full business name "Marketing Firm". Red Flag #4 Once in the office there were many young people waiting to be interviewed #5 There was a group of people cheering and hyping up new people to sell "services" #6 Interview was not one on one. Two people interviewed two candidates. #7 Interviewers revealed they did not have college degree #8 Lots of talk of traveling and perks #9 Talk of how the business is run like a sports team and a family #10 No legitimate salary offered and talk of three different commission options I even heard "200%" commission and once I said I was not interested in commission Caleb Stump is quoted saying "If training goes well I would be happy to offer you 50,000 dollars and 30% commission"
