- Holland, OH, USA

Home solicitation selling magazines.

- Lafayette, CO, USA

The scammer was a Black male who gave the name William Youngblood and said he was from Detroit, MI. Scammer was selling magazine subscriptions as donations for a literacy program. He said he was doing this to get a second chance and stay out of jail and explained that he earns a commission on the sales that allow him to pay for basic living expenses. He used compassion and a sense of urgency to manipulate. While there were several red flags, I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and gave him a check made out to the company Optimum Readers Service (optimunrs.com). I researched the company immediately after the scammer left and determined that it was in fact a scam. I stopped the check via my bank.

On April 16, 2024, a (black) salesman came to my door in the evening, and I foolishly answered it. He explained that he was selling books, either for myself or they could be donated to a school, Boys and Girls Club or YMCA in our local area. He told me that he was doing this to have a job and earn money to support his family and not be on welfare. I felt sorry for the guy, and didn’t really totally believe him, but to get rid of him, I made a minimum purchase of $60 in cash. He filled out a simple, but incomplete receipt from Optimum Reading Services LLC, and the books supposedly are to go to the local YMCA. Two days later and suspecting this a scam, I checked the name of the Company, and read other reviews similar in nature to mine. Best not to answer the door to strangers, and best not to buy from traveling salesmen and women.

- Davidson, NC, USA

A woman came to our door in Davidson, NC, claiming she was Jeanette Marshall, working for Optimum Reading Services and selling magazines for charity. I donated several magazine prescriptions. Upon further research, I believe this was a scam and my money won’t be donated in the fashion we discussed. I also believe door to door sales is prohibited in our town.

- Abington, PA, USA

A man dressed nicely came to our door selling magazines. He stated it was his job to improve his life. He also stated the company —Optimum Reading Services—was a company to help others. You could donate subscriptions to women’s shelters, youth organizations …I wrote him a check for 24 month subscription amounting to $120 for a children’s magazine and donated it to a women’s shelter. I realized he did not fill out the paperwork completely. We went on Better Bureau of Business ScamPulse.com and saw many reports/complaints about this company. They are not honest. We were scammed. I cancelled my check and reported this to the local Sarasota, Florida police department. I filled a report with the Federal Trade Commission as well. I will contact the Florida Local General Attorney’s Office as well.

Over a year ago I may have paid the scammer, Magazine Service(s), via check for what I thought was a legitimate magazine renewal that came to me by mail. It appears that Magazine Service(s) used my bank routing number and my account number from the check for a fraudulent ACH paper transaction. I have received no goods or services from Magazine Service(s) except possibly for the magazine renewal paid for by the original, signed check. That check was for much less than the amount Magazine Service(s) stole from my account. The bank says our only protection or remedy against this type of scam is not to use checks o to file a fraud claim and close the account after the fact. There are no front-end protections for the client/consumer, only for the bank and merchant or scammer in this case.
