My husband and I were exploring a home rental in southern California through a Redfin listing. When my husband contacted the number of the "agent" representing the rental, the agent, Adam, -- probably a bot -- said we'd have to pay a $49 inquiry fee, which was suspicious because no other rental agent had required a fee simply to have access to an application. I looked up "Adam's" phone number and discovered his connection to a scam associated with a rental business known as "Locayt." An online search for information about "Locayt" led me to a number of complaints online made by potential renters who, after paying $49 on their credit cards, never heard from "Adam" again and who discovered that the properties were not really for rent. That this group of scammers is still operating on Redfin is outrageous.

I asked for information about a rental property on Redfin.com. The email I received was from Locayt: "At Locayt we value your time and have a pre-screening process to ensure efficient scheduling. To avoid no-shows and time wastage, we kindly request serious applicants to complete a pre-screen application. Should you advance as a rental candidate, your initial fee will be credited toward the rental credit report fee. www.Locayt.com/apply". The Locayt "website" doesn't give any information about the property, it just requests a $49 fee to apply.

The company had a rental listing on Zillow with the address of *** Franklin Avenue, Taft, Ca 93268. I requested information about the property through Zillow and received a text message wanting me to fill out a pre-screening application in order to tour the property. The pre-screening cost $49. I was told that once the pre screening was completed, I would receive information about touring the property. I was also told that if we chose not to move forward after we toured the property, the $49 would be refunded. I completed the pre-screening application on 10/1/25 and followed up multiple times and was told that I would get information about the tour once pre-screening was completed. The listing was removed on 10/7/25 and I followed up again asking for a refund since I never toured the property and was told I could not get a refund because I never toured. I have attached screenshots of the conversation.

I was looking for a place to rent in Bayonne, NJ on Redfin. I requested application from a few places and a few minutes later someone from Locayt text me about my request. I told yes I am interested in the property in question. They sent me a link to apply and I applied and paid the application fee which was about $50 dollars. They then told me somebody from their team would reach out to me. Weeks later, I realized that nobody reached out, so I text back to then realized that I’ve been scammed. I asked for a refund and they said no, they can’t refund me since I didn’t do a tour.

Rental properties online were advertised. When I sent in a request to tour the home, I had to complete a pre-screening and pay a $49 fee and wait for someone to contact me to further the process. I completed the pre-screening and no one has ever responded to me. "Adam", which I believe is A.I. has been giving me the run round via text and refuses to refund payment because he said I never toured the rental. I did not tour the rental because no one has gotten back to me to schedule this tour. I believe this is a fraudulent business. I completed my pre-screening on August 5, 2025 and now it's August 21, 2025 and I have never received any responses,

the website https://www.locayt.com is for scammers. all the property they listed are fake. They contact you once you choose a "fake" housing/rental property to apply to. They text you right away requesting $49 fee for a pre-screening fee than a "agent" is supposed to contact you for a showing. Than they will try to get you to "buy" a quote for renters insurance. Don't Do It! They say after touring the property if you don't like it, they will refund you the $49. This is the "Refund" scam. After that you won't hear from them again, I try calling the credit and bank but they say they couldn't do anything and you have to contact them. Its all automated texts and answering machines. They are very sophisticated becuase I have try everything to get my $49 dollars back. Trust I will take them down one day. Trust and believe. Trust and believe and I'm see the scammers faces one day behind this targeting vulnerable people and the elderly. If you know how to take down this fake website, please do it.

On any website where you can look for houses, apartments, or condos for rent the company going by locayt lists houses that were at one point legitimately for rent steals the information and pictures and reposts the listing themselves. The listing they make is fake and when you try to rent the apartment they make you pay for and send a pre screen of all your personal information after this an AI chat person going by Adam contacts you via phone text message and acts as realator it obviously isnt and after already giving them your money they egg you on so you think youll be contacted by the house your trying to rent but you never get contacted because the property isnt actually for rent anymore. Dont be stupid and fall for this like we did.

A rental listing was posted and it immediately triggers a text from locayt, specifically Adam. Requesting an app fee of $49.

- Fresno, CA, USA • Jul 31, 2025

I saw a house for rent at 1244 S. Orange in Fresno, ca. I called the number and was not able to speak to a live person. A few seconds after, received a text from the same number. The man said I had to first pay a $49.00 fee to "view property". If I don't go through with it, money will be refunded. If I do go through with it, the $49 will be used towards the cost. I paid the $49. After I paid and was texting with the man, he then said I needed renters insurance. After that, I knew it was NOT right. Why would he demand renters insurance when I hadn't even seen property yet. I told him I changed my mind and wanted a refund. He said he couldn't give me a refund until after viewing. I then googled "Locayt" and right away the ScamPulse.com popped up and I read it. It's all a scam! Please DO NOT give these people your money. Something needs to be done!!!!!!!!! He tried to get more money from me for renters insurance, luckily I realized something was wrong before. I lost $49.

I saw a posting for an apartment and to be able to view the property, I needed to submit to a credit and background check. in text I was sent a link to locayt with questions regarding back information and social security numbers and emails associated with renters. had a gut feeling and didn't submit.

Locayt is a supposedly a Management company that has several rentals in California. They request you pay for application fee and within 5-7 days, youll be approved for a rental. Its been well over the time frame, i notified them only through filling out a form or you attempt calling the fake number that a AI robot answers and states youll hear from someone in 24 hrs. This never happens and they still take your money.

In a clause they have it states if you dont qualify, theyll return your money back. Well this isnt true becasue there is no live person to talk to and they keep stealing my money.

I saw an apartment listing online for 47 Astor Ct. in Sayreville, NJ 08872 for $2,700. I then went to apply for a tour. The scammer texted me back saying fill out a prescreen application. I then put in all my personal info until I got to the page that said pay $49 fee. I tried calling the number and it is an AI. The AI woman said that I would receive a call back. Then the scammer Adam texted me. I asked if he could call and he said he couldnt because everything had to be done electronically. I then drove by the location and the person who actually lives there and stated that this is definitely a scam. I told them that the apartment is listed and showed them the listing that is on several different sites along with the scammers fake locayt info that is set up like an actual website

Viewing rental sites on Zumper app on iphone, when putting in interest for rental property, text and email response to apply for a tour came via Locayt. They responded to email/texts and phone calls regarding application questions. No responses about application or a tour time. Additional messages from them about following up by calling and to apply with no mention of previous application.

On Redfin, there's an apartment listing for 24 Mott Street in Manhattan for a 1-bed 1-bath apartment for $2000/mo. I requested more information, and I immediately got an email and a text (from a person saying their name was Adam) with a link to a website called Locayt. It askes for a bunch of personal information (place of work, credit score, Photo ID etc) then asks for a $50 "pre-screening fee" to schedule a tour that says its refundable or goes towards the deposit. I texted "Adam" saying I would only give the $50 after the tour if I liked it and his response was "Totally get it. Just so you know, the pre-screening fee is refundable if you decide not to move forward after the tour. It's required before scheduling."

This "company" LOCAYT.COM responded to my inquiry about two rental properties in New York City. They said that their company does "pre-screening" as a service to landlords/real estate management companies and that the $49 fee will go toward a pre-screening credit process and that the money will go toward paying for the full credit check if I'm approved. They said it takes 5 days to complete the pre-screen process. They respond via text and it's clearly an AI message system. They continue to say I'll hear from them soon though it's been several days past the 5 day period. Stay AWAY from this fraudulent "business."

I responded to a rental listing on rent.com and was contacted by “Adam” who told me to fill out a $49 pre-screening application and get a renters insurance quote on Locayt.com. I should’ve known not to pay anything for a place I haven’t seen and the deal was too good to be true. Adam is a bot and I got scammed.
