I applied to rent a house listed on Craig’s list house rentals. I communicated with James Venson via text from a number provided on the rental property. After submitting a rental application via a link he provided, I paid $100 fee for the application via Zelle. Shortly thereafter I received a letter from Steven Marcus, who James said was his assistant, stating I had been approved. My name, ssn, birthdate, drivers license, and proof of income was part of the rental app. Then I received another letter from [email protected] stating they were from Rooftop Security Service asking for a $700 deposit to hold the property and get keys to access it. I paid the $700 via Zelle and Cash App ($350 each). Rooftop sent another letter requesting an additional $400 for an upgrade which I did not pay. At that point I knew I had been scammed. We never received the keys because the property was not actually for rent.
