Type of a scam Tech Support
In 2019, I had a message pop up on my laptop and my computer started to beep and say that my device has been compromised and to call a tech support number for help. They claimed they were a tech service offering their firewall protection to save my computer. They ended up tricking me into purchasing their firewall protection software with a fee off $199.99. I disputed this charge with my bank and they credited me the money back. I just got a call today, 3 years later, saying that my plan will automatically be renewed and to call and cancel if I no longer wanted the service. So I called and they said I must pay for the last 3 years of service (even though I didn’t use it [if there even was a service], & I had even got rid of that device), which was $1999. I told them I don’t have the money to pay that and I didn’t even know I had the “firewall protection software” and they said I signed a contract and I must not have read it well. He said if I wanted to cancel the auto renewal for another 3 years (6 years total) which would cost $5999, I must pay for the years I already had used their service for, $1999. The man said he’d try to get a discount for me because of how upset I was, and took off $500 of that $1999, so I had to pay $1499. They said I needed to pay for those services otherwise they wouldn’t be able to cancel my subscription and I would be charged $5999 in another 3 years. So I charged the $1499 to a Chase credit card and will be contacting Chase to file another dispute.
