A lady named Shyla came to my door and gave me a story about selling magazines in order to receive credits which her company would reward her for at varying levels as she was a single mom w/ 3 kids and grew up in the foster care system. She was very polite/ personable /had receipt/ laminated cards of her name/ what she needed and I fell for it. I gave her a check for $152 to donate 3 subscriptions to charity. After she left my house, I called the number on the receipt I got from her. The person who answered did not answer with a business name but just said hello and somehow had my first and last name although it was my maiden name. I then received 2 calls from that number I had just called to verify the business and somehow the person left a VM where it was just a person talking then yelling/ cussing at someone else that was obviously not a business phone number. I don't know why my gut instincts didn't scream at me to politely decline this woman- social norms and all I guess. But I have put a stop payment on the check less than 2 hours after she left so I am only out $25 for my gullibility but I know others won't be that lucky.
