My Mom received a check and a letter saying she had won a $500,000.00 lottery. They sent a check for $8965.90 to cover "tax, insurance, shipping and handling" . We called the number to see what kind of info we could get. The first call I got disconnected (hung up on) when I said why I was calling. I called a second time. I got the same guy and he asked for the "password" which I gave him. He said that was correct. I asked him what I was supposed to do. He said to deposit the check and call him back. I (lied to him) told him I had already deposited it. He seemed shocked and asked how/when I did that. I told him I had been to the bank that morning, so what do I do now? We got disconnected (hung up on?) again. I called back a third time and the call wasn't answered, and the message was that the voice mail box hadn't been set up. So I kind of gave up on it. The letter had no name or personal info on it. Definitely a big clue. And the original phone number had been whited out. The check was very real looking. I'm sure we would have been told to send some of the money back and keep the rest, but I couldn't really get the info from him.
