This is a report on an employment scam my child was a victim of via an unknown party posing as a small business. My child (19) received an email to their university student account from [email protected] claiming that the Center for Disability Services (Albany, NY) is looking for remote employees, and to send their resume to the given email address with a non-student email. My child sent their resume and received an email from someone who claimed to be administration for the Center for Disability Services. My child was told to go through "orientation," which involved requiring me to purchase check printing paper ($27.36), which they said they would reimburse. We never received reimbursement. Once I purchased the paper, my child was sent an online check of $996.84 to print and deposit to my child's bank account. Once the check was deposited, my child was told to create a PayPal account and send the money to R a k s h i t h Mullukatte under the suspicious gmail account [email protected]. At this point, we caught on and realized it was a scam, and a quick call to the real Center for Disability Services confirmed our suspicions. My child called their bank to freeze their account and proceed with the fraud investigation process, and a police report to local authorities has been made. I have the email addresses of all parties who participated in the scam as well as a phone number, which all is included in this report. I also have screenshots of all the email and text correspondence that occurred, so let me know if you need further information.
