We were approached by someone who indicated an interest in investing in our business. It was close to X-mas '24 and they run/ran a group of Angel investors and said they were looking to get one or two more investments to their syndicate prior to the year ending since a number of the investors had supposedly set aside an amount that needed to be invested for tax purposes prior to the New Year. We did 3 or 4 Zoom calls with this person and did due diligence on them as well. The person's name, story, company, background, etc., checked out and they had/have a fairly impressive portfolio of companies they invested in. Anyway, they had supposedly soft-circled a certain amount of money for us from their investors. Their charge for their services (i.e., e-mails to investors, data room creation, etc.) was $2,500. If a deal wasn't reached in 60 days, that $2,500 was supposed to come back to us. During this window, the syndicate lead (i.e., the person we'd been speaking to) supposedly got fairly seriously ill. If that's the case, no problem, our heart goes out to him, just refund us the $2,500. We received a few e-mails from his team, then crickets and no money. I'm honestly not sure if this was meant to be a rug pull from the beginning or if it's the rest of the team that just doesn't care about what was legally agreed to. We're a start-up and every little bit helps, so this is a big hit to us. Anyway, just want to make sure nobody else goes in with this company under the false assumption they're going to get funded.
