Saying that we are going to be renewed for a subscription and they were going to take 485 $ in 24 hours also there is a second number 8444199833 that wanted access to my computer.

- Albany, NY, USA

Full text of Email: Please refer to the attached paper for customer details regarding the successful renewal of your plan.

The .pdf claimed to be an auto-renewal notice for a $500 Geek Squad support plan.

They listed a help/dispute phone number three times. 1 (833) 493-0909 is not a legitimate Best Buy number.

There may have been other links in the document, but I only opened it with a pdf reader that didn't recognize hyperlinks.

When my computer didn't allow me to log -in, I used my cellphone to find a number to call to schedule an appointment. I found a number that allowed me to call for an appointment. The individual at 628-666-3535 took over my computer and told me that since Best Buy didn't protect my computer they were going to refund me a partial credit of $149.99 wired to my bank . However the screen showed that 18,149.99 had been wired to my bank. So now I needed to go to my bank and have them rewire the money to an account in China. I was given the name Zhou Zhenlin and was told to avoid taxes in the wiring, I should say the individual was a friend who needed this for medical reasons. I told the bank this but felt that this wasn't right so I wrote a note that Mark was listening on my phone in my pocket and asked had there been any fraud from Best Buy. The Vice President came and told me that yes there had been many scams from this business. We worked to get me a new banking account since I had seen the screen that showed the 18,499.99 (which they think was a fake screen) and was being asked to rewire from my bank. No money was lost, just had my computer hacked.

I received an email from the beforementioned email but saying that it was time to renew my GEEK SQUAD contract immediately at the price of 419.00. I had my receipt and booklet handy so I could see that I signed up on 10/19/22 and it was far from a year for renewing. My initial price paid was 199.00 for one year NOT 419.00 for 3 months so I said that I knew this was fraudulent activity and would be reported to BBB. They said I had to fill out a cancellation form and asked me what browser I was using. I said it was none of their business and I wasn't going to change browsers. They said then the charge would go through today. (your reactivation request is in progress @ #9856-YTOK)

Told me it was renewal of a Best Buy geek squad membership and that I needed to call the number immediately in order to not be charged $419. They attempted to get me to give them my bank account information. Following the call I also got a second email telling me I would be charged for McAfee software from the same email address also for a charge of $419

Scammer sent me an email with a very realistic looking page of what seemed to be a BestBuy renewal for a Laptop Service Plan. It so happened that I have purchased Laptops, Cameras and many other electronic items from BestBuy, including recently last year, so I though it was legit. The email stated that the renewal for the $417 was processed and my service plan would continue uninterrupted. Since the email stated that if I had any questions regarding the renewal I could call the Geek Squad Directly at ( 808) 229-3680, I did. Incredibly like the report I just saw on your site, a guy by the name of Mathew answered, with "BestBuy, this is the Geek Squad" and ask me how he could help - very professional. When I proceeded to ask him about the email he starting asking me for my email, and phone number, which I did not provide. I was ready to almost provide him my info. So, I asked him to provide proof of the device and who he was upon which he hung up.

My main concern is that he/they now have my Cell Phone Number and my full name, which could be used to correlate to other pieces of my personal information. Not sure if I can do anything to protected myself. Please provide this info to Law Enforcement /Cyber security officials, if possible. Thanks!

It really upsets me with the number of scams and illegal efforts that go on with the internet. I want to do all I can to help bring these types of issues to justice. Please do not fall into their hands and do what you can to report or access agencies that will help with catching these criminals before they hurt others. Best regards
