Type of a scam Tax Collection
My partner who is a senior citizen received a threatening phone call. First saying they were calling from the IRS confirming his name and address then proceeding to say that they were informing him of his impending court and possible arrest for not paying his proper taxes. The caller said several notices had been mailed out and that they were returned unsigned and therefore the amount my partner owed would have to be paid or he would have to hire an attorney or go to jail. I told my partner it sounded like a scam and he hung up but I called the number back on my phone.
The person answering proceeded to tell me my name and address probably taken from my caller ID. then he proceeded to tell me I was owing taxes and went into the same sort of rhetoric about how I owed taxes and would go to jail and would have my property seized even though I never mentioned the call on the other phone from my partner. In the background I could hear other callers getting a similar message of threats of jail or having to get attornoys. or property seizures. Most of the callers have accents, maybe from India or Philippines?. So I just hung up too, but I would like to report the problem for maybe there are others that are giving important information to these scammers or are somehow intimidated by them. The number I have for them is 205-499-5432. In one case my partner was told to ask for ex 71924, and in another case to ask for Richard Gofston.
If you can do anything to stop these guys or print warnings in the paper we would appreciate it.
