I received a pop-up warning on my laptop stating that my computer was being hacked and to contact Microsoft immediately. A phone number was supplied. I attempted to close the message but was warned by another pop-up message that I risked losing all my files and the use of my computer completely if I did not immediately contact Microsoft at the number provided. I called, the person who answered stated he was a representative from Microsoft and that my computer, tablet and telephone were being hacked and needed immediate repair to the tune of $300.00. I refused the service. At this point the representative became increasingly insistent, telling me that I would lose the use of all my devices as I had no firewalls set up on any of them and then the price dropped to $200. I again refused but was still unsure what to do. At this point the price dropped again to $49.99, this I was assured was the lowest he could go. I refused a third time. The representative then insisted that I would be responsible for putting all my personal information at serious risk if I did not have install the fix immediately. I allowed them access to my laptop. I observed that the representative had control of my computer and saw that he changed all of my icons but nothing else. He stated that they (they company) would provide further instructions for my phone and tablet. This was not done. I finally was able to contact a family member who informed me to immediately stop payment on my credit card and file the necessary fraud alerts on my credit card and bank accounts. I contacted my credit card company and was told that since I had allowed the bogus tech support into my computer, I now had to take my computer to a reputable service center (ie; Geek Squad) and have the computer checked, evaluated, have them write a letter on company letterhead stating what was or was not done by the scammer, what was done incorrectly or not at all and that it all must be signed and dated and submitted within 30 days or I would be responsible for the charge. I did run my security software on my laptop at the advice of a family member and there was one file that needed to be removed as it appeared to be malware, my other devices; my tablet and telephone where never hacked by this company.
