Type of a scam Tech Support

Recently when I logged onto Facebook I picked up some kind of malware and my computer locked up. I got page that came up and said I needed to call this number to get the computer cleaned up. So I trusted it and called the number. They told me my computer was infected with malware and it would cost $499.00 to clean out the malware and restore the computer. I didn't check if this was legitimate or not and agreed. But when I agreed they told me that we would drop $99.00 off and charge me $400. After they took control of my computer and said it was fixed they transferred me to another guy who said I owed them $499. Then said $500. I wrote a check and took a picture and sent it to them via email. However yesterday they called me and said they couldn't cash the check because I never authorized it and insisted that I do so. I decided that this just might be a scam. How do I know it wasn't them who infected my computer to begin with so they could scam me out of $500. After coming to this site, I feel that this is exactly what happened

I was on Facebook when a blank block popped up. Inside that block, it said to call a toll-free number because my computer had been scammed. The message said that it came from Microsoft. I have a Microsoft system in my computer, so I trusted it and called the number. The Asian guy who answered the phone said that they were working on contract with Microsoft. He told that he would clean my computer and fix it for a one-time fee of $585. I'm disabled and was willing to pay it. I know nothing about computers. I went to my bank right away and told the manager and she told me that I had been scammed. She issued me a new ATM card, checked for any charges that I didn't make, and put out an alert to all branches.

They also introduced themselves as Quantum IP security when I first called and agreed to let them take control of my computer. Then when I wrote the check they said make it out to Techmax IT solutions.
