I needed an EIN to open an estate account and was at the credit union so I clicked on what I thought was the government website to apply for the EIN. I answered the questions and put all my info in and submitted it so I could get the EIN while I was still at the credit union since I drove two hours to get there. I was thinking maybe an Estate EIN just costs more, seems like everything nowadays does. However I immediately realized I may have been re-directed to an unofficial site. I got a fraud alert, called my credit card to cancel payment, was told to call the company first and was given their phone number and told they would hold the charge until I got back to them. I called Tax ID dept, was put on hold, and finally hung up after 5-8 minutes. I then called my credit card company back, several transfers and holds later I told them what happened and not to process the charge but they said it was too late it already went through. I contacted the Tax ID-company via email since they weren't answering their phone, and they also told me it was too late because an EIN was already processed. I feel like you are put on hold with the company so they have time to process the number and you can't cancel. This time sequence was under 30 minutes but because of holds and transfers by the Tax ID company and my credit card company I was unable to cancel out. So now I will have to dispute the charge and jump though hoops to try and get it resolved. Buyer beware!
