I already sent you my request, but I wasn't sure if I filled in this blank. As I said earlier, my publisher Dorrance recommended this company Scryptor for setting up a personal website and eventually an audio-visual webcam in the future for my seven books, all of which are about music history. Their consultant is an oriental woman named Giselle Young, who although she seems really nice and knowledgable is a pain in the butt, who would not stopping calling me. For thre weeks she strung me along until I got suspicious and had a family friend talk to her. Now their company wants a $3000 deposit up front for their services. I told them due to an eye infirmary I do not work. They have gradually dropped the payment from $15000down to $1000, but I still want them to keep their end of the bargain and set up the free personal website and web cam for me, plus any additional equipment that I might need. Since I already sent you an earlier complaint, all I want for you to do is check them out and make sure they post my seven books on their website and sent out to all schools, universities, libraries, churches and educational institutions first, as initially promised, but I want all profts to be sent to me, no matter what. The same goes for all book readings, discussions, professional appearances which they also promised to get me. Also they said they would get started on getting my book promoted through the mass media, radio website and television and I want this to be done, or I will take action against them.

Subject: Scam Report - Seeking Resolution and Investigation

To: Better Business Bureau, Los Angeles

From: **** *******. **** **** **** ****, ********** ** *****. Cell: ************

Summary: Report a $6,966.66 scam orchestrated by Francis Williams and Darren Lane.

Sear Madam / Sir,

This executive brief outline the key events of the scam and the issues at hand. Details are included in the attachments in pdf format. If these are not accessible, please revert, and I shall send individual files

Background:

On January 30th, I received a call from Francis Williams, who claimed to represent Scryptor. He offered to help adapt my Amazon book, 'Beyond Drake- No Earth 2.0’, into a movie or TV series for a fee of $800, which would be for making my 10-minute storyline pitch to producers of my story. He communicated this with statements and a contract stating that Scryptor would cover all expenses, like scripts and documentation, in exchange for 10% of all future earnings from this endeavor.

In February, after a pitch to a German producer, I was informed that the $800 fee covered only one pitch, despite earlier promises. A screenshot from the producer expressing interest led to the next request for a "Pitch Bible," which I provided, but no response was ever received. When I complained…

On March 1st, I was told to accelerate sales by hiring a 'Hollywood Agent' for $3,500, of which I paid $1,166.66 for the first 10 pitches, who would pitch my story to 30 listed production companies. However, this initiative never materialized, and the funds should be returned. Suddenly a new player arrived…

Darren Lane entered the picture as Director Lane, who, in our first meeting, stated that he had $60 million available, and was allocating this amount to my story, and a proposed signed contract for a 3-4% advance by Aug 10th. He mandated the hiring of a specific scriptwriter, Stephen Folker.

Francis told me that Scryptor had already paid Stephen Folker $45,000, and I was asked to pay $15,000 for Stephen’s scriptwriting services, of which I paid $5,000. However, doubts arose about Stephen's credentials when I requested proof of payment transparency.

Checklist for investigation:

1. Scryptor's legitimacy and licensing. For operating in this business.

2. Validity of company addresses. Their current address is a rental office space address

3. Francis always said he was busy with other producers and projects. Is this true they have a thriving movie business

4. Authenticity of Darrel Lane's claims about having $60 million in his bank for allocation, based on which I was being asked to accelerate the release of my payments.

5. Proof of $50,000 payment made to Stephen Folker as stated

6. Dubious practices, including upfront payments for non-approved tasks

My request:

Resolution Request: I am seeking your assistance to Retrieve a full refund of $6,966.66.

Pursue damages for the time and effort invested in this scam. 7 months of continuous distractions and payments

Investigate these individuals to prevent further scams.

After reading your post and reflecting on my own extensive experience in self-publishing, I wanted to share some insights. Hi, I'm Sherry Deubreau, a self-published author with over two decades of writing and publishing experience. Let me tell you, self-publishing is definitely not a walk in the park. I've been down the road of disappointment with various companies, and it's been quite the rollercoaster. But you know what? Those experiences have taught me a crucial lesson: managing expectations is key. Looking at your post, it seems like you might have set your hopes a bit too high, maybe beyond what's realistically achievable in this field. Self-publishing is a challenging journey, and it's important to strike a balance between ambition and what's practical in this industry.

I may not know what actually transpired between you and the agent or what agreement you have had, but I can say that I have been able to successfully get my foot into the door with professionals who have helped me “get my voice heard.” Darren Lane is nothing but an angel who has helped me get out of the limbo that most self-publishing authors are in, and I am grateful for that. I have been networking with various professionals, from producers and advertisers to publishers. However, this does not mean I do not have to work my butt off. I have already been handed the opportunity on a silver platter, and this does not mean that I will just have to sit and wait for a miracle. I also need to do my fair share of the bargain.

There is no way in the contract that says Mr. Lane or any company will get you a sealed deal with a movie company instantly. Besides, what you just did, especially publicly lambasting a respected person like Mr. Folker online and questioning his credibility, is uncalled for. Clearly, you did not care enough to really get to know these people who are willing to help you. Nevertheless, I wish you good luck on your journey. Hopefully, you stop burning bridges too quickly. That is not how things work in this industry. It will not help you get anywhere.

In reading your complaint, I found several aspects interesting and confusing. And I would respectfully like to take the time to reply to your experiences with my own.

I was introduced to Director Lane through Scryptor (different agent than the one you had) in early 2023. (Note: these are separate business entities). Prior to that, I had been contacted by several companies and individuals who said they had ties into Hollywood to represent my books to studios, but Director Lane is the only one who has proven to me he does. He not only has deep ties, but also power and extensive knowledge and experience in the industry. With his experience in the business, he set up a definite plan of action for my books, and I currently have several projects ongoing with him. However, many of my projects had been stalled in the screenplay stage due to the screenwriters’ strike, something that no one had control over but impacted them nonetheless. Now that the strike has been recently resolved, the projects are moving forward again.

Since I’ve been in constant contact with Director Lane, I have had an opportunity to get to know him and his deep desire to help as much as he can people achieve the dreams they have for their books to be adapted to screen. He is honest, transparent, and straightforward with the information on the realities of what it takes for this to happen. He has also shared how there are many factors that are out of his control that can get in the way of that dream being achieved. Through him, I have learned much about the filmmaking industry, and appreciate him taking the time to share this with me.

Let me be very clear: from the very first, Director Lane has been very honest and transparent with me about the process of book adaptation to screen and that it is a slow, lengthy, and arduous one. (I would strongly add that it is not for the impatient or the faint of heart. Or those who feel entitled!) He also has stressed how important it is to prove the strength of the work through book sales, social media followers, and the like. He was very informative about how the treatments and screenplays needed to be copyrighted under my name; therefore the majority of the expenses had to be paid by me. And, he has always been clear that there are no guarantees that any given studio is looking for a particular project at the time it is presented.

Director Lane has never and will never give any guarantees that a book adaptation project will be acquired by a studio. All he ever says is that once he has all the materials that are needed to present it to the studio(s), he will give it his all to give the project its best chance to be acquired.

I know, without a doubt, that this is a chance for my books to be adapted to screen that I never would have had without his help.

In short, I can truthfully say that working with Director Lane there has always been honesty, transparency, and respect.

Know this: you greatly disrespected, maligned, and defamed an individual who was willing and very much able to help you, even though he would’ve been taking a huge gamble on your unproven work. You definitely errored greatly in your actions! Don’t be surprised if you never get an opportunity like the one you just threw away!

My name is Don Holman, and this company also approached me when I mentioned in the LA Market that I wanted to work in the field. I've been in the self-publishing business for years and haven't had any success. With the recent changes in the industry, where Hollywood Studios have seemingly appeared out of nowhere, it is difficult to put my faith in things. A lot of things don't appear to add up when you look at this information. The procedure you followed was correct; you cannot expect these studios to listen to people like us out of the blue, and I believe you are implying that it should be free on your end. For people like me who want answers as well, reading reviews like this that seem to be too one-sided is not exactly healthy, so to all writers, do your own diligence and read between the lines. The review does not specify who you are, but I checked out your book, Mr. Guleria. I respect the fact that you are self-published. I looked into Mr. Lane as well, and other than Scryptor, I don't see anything wrong with him. So, in my opinion, you were burned. You didn't like how things were going and wanted to leave, but defaming a company and an executive is a terrible way to go about it. The writer also checks out, implying that you have no name in the book business and are looking for individuals to aid you. You used the term scam because you seem to not understand the fact that you need help and no one is entitled to help you for free, sir. As old as I am, that much is a fact.

A lot of these reviews sprout all over the place, and mostly these are people who got burned. From your review itself, I don't think you got burned at all, but you just wanted some answers. We don't get to have everything we want, especially when we are trying to prove ourselves in business, and it doesn't help to get yourself a lawsuit for defaming people.
My dream is still alive, and I am hoping someone may be able to help me, but I am not stupid enough to think that it will be easy. After doing my own diligence, I will listen to what the company has to say, and I am hoping that the executive mentioned above will listen to my idea at least.
