I first received a text message from a publishing company called RJ Parker Publishing regarding a job offer and online interview for a remote job position of content editor and proofreader. I was first contacted through text message and then did a job interview on a Skype chat. I was chatting with the supposed interviewer via Skype chat for around an hour, which felt like any other job interview aside from being only done through chat and the hourly pay rate seemed a bit high (though I never had a previous job in this industry). The next day I was notified that I was approved for the job and received pdfs of job forms I had to print and fill out. I did this and sent photos of my signed forms to the email address I got them from and to the Skype chat I had my interview in. For a few more days, we stayed in contact on Skype. Earlier this week, I contacted the person asking about when my supposed MacBook Pro and other “working materials” would get to me, believing they would be mailed to me. Yesterday via email and Skype chat, I was notified that I need to print out and deposit a check that was emailed to me in pdf format in order for me to pay for the working materials (including a MacBook Pro and other technology). I was told to deposit the check through my mobile banking app, but as it wouldn’t go through, I went to my local bank today to have it deposited in person. At the bank, the bank teller informed me that the check was fraudulent and has been declared VOID.
