Type of a scam Employment
How it all laid out: after applying for a job as 3D artist (from a posting by Rimfire BWP at one of the online jobsites),
1) I got an email on 12/16/24 from Brian Rollins (Talent Acquisition Manager) at Rimfire BWP for a job interview for the 3D Artist position.
2) I then had a typed (room chat) 1st Interview with Sophia Williams (Interview Manager, HR) on Wed 12/16/24 which went well and
3) I then had a 2nd interview (by phone) with Nathan Gagnon (HR Manager) on Fri 12/18/24.
4) On Monday 12/23/24, I got a call from Nathan offering me the job, I accepted, and they sent a contract which I signed and sent back and they wanted me to start on Jan 6 2025. As time was of the essence, they (Rimfire BWP) said that they would pay for all software and hardware and would send a check to cover all costs and for me to digitally deposit the money (on that same Monday), which I did.
5) On Tues 12/24/24, with the money seemingly in my account, they had me perform a Zelle transfer of $1244 to their IT specialist (COTSea IT & Gadgets- Muhammad Asim) to pay for the software. Seemed a bit odd such a rush but nothing seemed to be majorly out of the ordinary (as they wanted me to start right after the New Year). Xmas came on Wed and
6) on Thurs 12/26/24, while I was in the MS Teams chatroom with Sophia Williams, I happened to look at my account and saw a NEGATIVE $1244 and I immediately brought this to her attention to which she replied she’d get it squared away with payroll, don’t worry. I called by bank to find out what the issue was and was told that the $2899 that I had deposited, in fact, had NO FUNDS….in other words, a fraudulent rubber check!! She assured me that it would be resolved and I was furious as, of course, nothing like this had ever happened to me in 32 years in working as a 3D artist.
7) On Friday 12/27/24, I called my bank to contest and lay a claim against Zelle to try to retrieve/recoup my $1244 and gave them ALL the information (names, dates etc) I could and am now in a ‘wait and see with fingers crossed’ mode.
8) My bank assured me that they (Rimfire) couldn’t get anything else from my account and that they would investigate.
Today, 12/30/24, I called a Canadian phone number for Rimfire BWP, which was different from the Utah area code (that I had originally gotten a call from for my 2nd interview), and a gentleman answered and I asked if this was Rimfire BWP and the very first thing he said was, “Is this about a 3D artist position?” I said yes and he said he’d gotten hundreds of calls from American 3D artists about the position and that he was a one-man company and that he’d been hacked by people now using his company’s name (but one that’s just ever so slightly different).
It is absolutely reprehensible that hackers would take advantage of out of work desperate 3D artists to squeeze some money out of them and I’d commented to a friend of mine this past weekend that they weren’t going to get far with my $1244….then admitted, ‘unless they’re doing this to a whole lot of other artists”, which seems to be what they’ve done. Rimfire BWP (the CANADIAN company) is real but if there’s any Rimfire BWP advertising for 3D artists, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!
