Home Improvement Contractor Scam

Two men, Tom (who had a Scottish accent) and John, saying they were with Rightway Roofing and Masonry stopped by my house and asked if they could go up on my roof and inspect what they thought was damage from some branches that were touching the roof. I allowed them to go up. They gave me an estimate of $3,400 and said they would return the next day to repair the damage. They came back the next day, spent a few hours on my roof, supposedly taking measurements and assessments and then said they saw termite damage and that the estimate for repairs was now $28,500 and I needed to write a check for a $16,000 deposit before they started work the next day. They said that their credit card system was down so I would need to write a check to their accountant, Patrick Maloney. I called the number on the business card they gave me, which was the number on the website, and the man who answered, Patrick, verified that their credit card system with Chase Bank was down, but was very unprofessional and rude, so I was suspicious. I said I wasn't comfortable writing a check to a person and would wait until their credit card system was available again. They said that if I did that, then I would be charged tax and the estimate would go up. They tried to scare me about the damage on the roof and what would happen if I didn't fix it immediately. They said they'd already ordered parts so I had to pay. I refused to write a check and eventually they left. I realized afterwards that they were scammers.
