We got a video call from Publishers Clearing House claiming we won $3.8 million and a new 2026 Ford Truck. There was an issue with the call - we could not see their face. They asked the name of the bank we use and told us they would also pay off two of our credit cards. We are supposed to call them back later today to pay a $200 fee.

This individual gave the name of Bobby Larson says he is from Publishers Clearing House and advised I had won their promotional sweepstake prize of $2 million dollars for paying my phone bills on time for the past 5 years. He says this promotion only happens every 5 years and that I had 15 days to collect my prize. But the only way I can receive my prize is if I first pay $300 for taxes owing to the government for my winnings. He also claimed he is with the Better Business Bureau.

Publishers clearing house called and left a message "Bruce Roberts" won 2nd place in the monthly sweepstakes in the clearinghouse and to call back as soon as possible. Had a little bit of a different accent and it was quiet in the background. He let know that you won $18,000,000 and there was more money for doing other tasks. Gave a set of numbers to obtain the money and that Bruce would get in contact with FBI and IRS to obtain money and to deal with fraud.

Individual called and said he was from Publishers Clearing House and that I have won 7.5 million. He then asked several questions about how I felt about winning this prize. He also said I’d won a 2025 Mercedes Benz 460. All I had to do is provide 3 means of ID and buy a “money pal” card from Walmart, CVS, or Walgreens for $500.00. The PCH team would then pick me up and take me to my bank to deposit the check at which time I would give them the “Money Pak” card. Knowing you don’t have to pay money to get a prize, I told the caller I was going to check out the “money pak” card to see what it involved and I’d call them back. The caller said I needed to call him back within 20 minutes. I hung up and started checking, including my local BBB, which referred me to BBB.org.

I received a letter in the mail 5/2/2026 stating I had won $750,000 from Publishers Clearing House. The letter also included a check for $8702.68. The letter says the check is to help toward paying taxes and processing fees. The letter tells me to keep this strictly confidential until the award has been deposited in my account. It also instructs me to deposit the check in my bank account and then immediately contact claims agent Paul Smurl at 718-239-2239. They state their office number is 518-239-2239

- Genoa, OH, USA • May 04, 2026

Letter in the mail to elderly person saying he won a no-entry required sweepstakes of $750,000. Recipient was told to contact his claims agent, "Paul Smurl," for method of payment. They said they gave him a check to "assist you with out-of-pocket expenses to enable your payment" (payment towards taxes and processing fees). It says the check can be deposited through ATM or inside a bank branch. The recipient is supposed to contact the agent immediately to start processing the remaining funds. (I read online that if you call, they will ask you to remit the funds from the check and then eventually, the check will be reported as fraud and taken back, so you've paid the money to the scammer and are out the money.) The letter also says to keep the award letter "strictly confidential until your cash prize winnings have been processed and remitted to your designated account." It further threatens that if you don't keep it confidential, you could face "double or false claims, identity theft and impersonation."

He wanted my information for Publishers Clearing House. I didn't give him any. I instead turned it around on him and told him I was with a company that was going to give him money. He willingly gave info I didn't write down. I then told him to not give out personal info on the phone and to stop trying to scam people. He got angry and threatened me. I told him to f off and hung up. He then called back and threatened more.
