Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

Received a call from someone who identified himself as David Parker and was calling from Publisher’s Clearing House to congratulate me on winning $5.5 million and $10,000 a week for life and a Mercedes Class C sedan. He asked if I wanted a public or private announcement of my winnings. I told him private, then he told me that they would take the taxes out of my winnings so I would need to contact their claims department to make the arrangements.

He gave me numbers for all the different phone information I would need to claim my prize. Then said I needed to call immediately and then call him back and left his number. I called ScamPulse.com and confirmed my suspicion that this was a scam.

I received a letter containing check for $8897.50 with a telephone number to call Glen Smith. He said I was supposed to deposit the check and call him. He would then tell me how much the service fee I owed was to access my winnings. The check did not come from him, but the company he represented.

James McCarthy contacted me claiming he represented PCH and that I was the 2nd Place winner, with a prize of 2.5 million dollars, $5,000 a week for life, and a 2020 Mercedes, shell gas for a year, licensed and insured by AllState. He informed me I would need to pay processing fee of $499.32. After I would be issued a check from Bank of America, with a 32% income tax with the IRS. All I had to do was visit the post office and send a money order. I listened and told James it was the most put together scams I had ever heard, and the line went dead.

I received a letter in the mail informing me that I had won 2nd prize in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes for $450,000. With the first initial check along with the letter. But it made me suspicious because they did not want me to tell any 3 rd party until I contacted them. So I Googled Publishers Clearinghouse and found out that they do not send out letters to your door. They only show up at your door with flowers and the great big check. So if you get a letter claiming you won, Report it to the BBB.

"David Brown" called and said that I had won the publisher's clearing house contest. He called my wife's cell phone. And he texted that number too. He provided his badge number, a confirmation code, a tracking number, and a call back number. He went through the entire speech, 3.5 million dollars, I could pick out the type of Mercedes I wanted. The gentleman called me at 9:00 pm at night on 09-06-19 and advised that he was with Publisher Clearing House and that I had won 7.5 million dollars and a 2019 Ford Explorer. He stated that I would need to go to the bank and get $2,500.00 first thing Saturday morning on 09-07-19 and get the money in the form of a cashiers check. That I would need to mail it to him send to the following address: Shanice Davis 306 Meadows Court Apt 136 D Daytona Beach, Florida 32114. I asked why I would need to send it to this address if he was with Publisher Clearing House. He advised that no one would mess with the money that I would be sending him to the Florida address but him. He then put me on hold and I heard a lot of people in the background speaking in another language. When I asked him why they were speaking in another language he advised that they were having a meeting. I told him that I knew it was a scam and I would be reporting him to the BBB and also the local authorities.

July 15,2019 my husband received a text message from David binks, implying from Publishers Clearing House and that he had won $250,000; and needed to transfer immediately $3500.00 to cover taxes and processing. He did not give an address where to send the money at that time, said he would tell when the money was ready to send.

He continued texting back several times daily, asking if the money was ready to send.

On July 18th; he texted again with the instructions; send cash or cashiers check to Thomas Maurice Edah; 10111 Bissonnet Street; Apt 268; Houston, TX 77036. Said to be sure to take a picture of the cash, or the cashier check receipt & text to him before mailing. He stated that it was urgent that the money was sent that day as "The Security Patrol" was ready to deliver his winnings. I phoned Publishers Clearing House to talk to them about it, and they said they never asked for money upfront, I did fill out a scam report on the form they emailed to us. We never sent him any money. However, I think we have finally gotten rid of him; but wanted you to know about this.

Publishers clearing house claims no purchase necessary in order to enter their sweepstakes, but in fact when you do enter and confirm your entry number they ask that you make a purchase in order to finalize your entry.

5-15-19. Short version of what happened: Had phone call to return call regarding a UPS package for delivery. Finally returned call after getting 3 calls. Call was from a "Rev. James Reed". He "swore by God" this was for real. He asked if I had heard of Publishers Clearing House. Then stated I had won $3.5 million, a 2019 Mercedes, and $250,000 payment for life, tax free. (I never said yes). I again asked who he was and he then said that all over the United Sates people were winning from the American Senior Citizen group contest. He had my name, address, and phone number as verification. I continued to question giving vague answers. Finally he said all I had to do was present my "claim card". When I asked how to provide that he said all I had to do was send him a money order to verify my identity and release the claim. At this point I hung up.

Told me he was from the publishers clearing House. Same man calls for my elderly mother all the time. Claiming we have won a certain amount of money or a cadalac and is in town waiting for me to drive down and pick it up. Eventually he gets to the part where he always asks for money before he is able to give us the enormous check. He has been calling for years and knows my mother by name.

Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

It started with a phone call from a Dave Sawyer (heavy accent) explaining how much I had won. He wanted an email address to send me the information on the prize of $8.8M plus a Mercedes sedan. They showed a check from bank of America in that amount and a Pic of a guy holding a big check with myt name on it. There was also an "itemization" if the winnings with a breakout for IRS Processing fee of $984. They needed that amount in a cashiers check sent to someone in Tucson before the payment could be released. I bit. They also had the names of the presenters and a GM for verification. I then received an "IRS" letter with my name misspelled and strange wording needing another $2600 for state and income taxes. That was the red flag for me. I bid them a nasty good bye.

I received a call informing me that I was a winner in the Publishers Clearing house sweepstakes. I knew this was a scam because I never entered the sweepstakes. I decided to see where the call led. The man gave me his name and ask me to repeat it back to him which I did not. He then asked me to repeat some of the initial information he gave me and I told him that I couldn't remember. He asked me to write numbers down on a piece of paper. He have me an ID #, a ticket #, a Bar code #, confirmation #, Ref #. Once I had written everything down he asked me to read everything back to him so he could record it for the BBB, Bank of America and someone else that I cannot recall. I told him that I was having problems hearing him and would like to call him right back. He gave me his phone # 571-216-8836 and said his name was Andy Golderg. I called him back and he answered so I know it is a legitimate phone number although he did not answer with a company name but it was his voice. He wanted me to repeat the numbers back to him and I again said that I was having phone issues and asked if he would send me the information and I would get it notarized and sent back. I asked him if he had my address and he said yes. I asked him to repeat it to me so that I made sure that it went to the proper address. He hung up on me and when I tried to call him back, he did not answer. He was clearly trying to record me.
