My granddaughter answered an ad for a job on craigslist with Patrick Graham. Without asking for anything other than her contact information, he agreed to pay her $600/week to be his personal assistant. He told her he was a venture capitalist for contractors in construction.The work involved her purchasing a box of blank checks which she then printed out from information he emailed, and then sent via FedEx. The checks were made out to individuals, not business names, and were in varying amounts of several thousand dollars (e.g, $1000-$6000). The company name on some of the checks was Zaman Construction and on others it was P.M Machine Co. The bank names on the checks Cornerstone Bank and Sovereign Bank, NA. He told her not to put more than 5 or 6 envelopes any one FedEx box ("for tracking purposes" he told her). After the first week, when she was expecting to be paid, he told her she would be paid the next week, with extra. In the mean time, she purchased ink and paper to continue printing the checks and FedEx labels and an enclosure which read: "Enclosed is a check for you to get started wit the job. Once received, send a text with your full name to this number 678.812.8017 for authorization of deposit. Do not deposit the check until you have got authorization to deposit the check, else it will be rejected at the bank.") As she continued the work for him, she kept asking to be paid. He told her his account had been hacked. Upon further pressure from her, he told her to go to her bank, purchase a cashier's check for $5 or $10 made out to herself and then send him a photo of the check. She emailed him to let him know she was at the bank (although she did not purchase a cashier's check); he did not reply and has not been in touch since.
