My wife and I have been looking to purchase a classic car for a hobby. We’d been searching online and have been keeping an eye on a 1963 Pontiac Catalina on Facebook Marketplace for several weeks. We finally decided to inquire about it with intention to purchase. From Facebook, we were directed to:

https://oldamericanironsales.com/listing/1963-pontiac-catalina/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgN... />
On the website we located the Contact Information and called the number provided: 623-343-7812 and a person named “Alfred Howe” aka “Al” answered. He was able to confirm the vehicle was still available for sale and sent photos via text of the vehicle. Because we live in Washington State and the vehicle was in Arizona, we knew there would be additional shipping costs, so I negotiated the sale price of the vehicle and we agreed to a final price of $21,976.00 which would include overall the vehicle, taxes & shipping costs. On 7/25/2024 Al provided me with a Purchase Order #CC-27677-8 showing the balance due and complete wire instructions. On the same day, I went to my credit union and initiated the wire transfer for $21,976 to Grow Motors Dealership LLC.

A couple days passed with no communication, so we reached out to Al to get an update on receipt of funds for the wire and to obtain shipping information. Al confirmed that the wire had been received and that they were waiting on the shipping carrier to finalize the delivery date. On 7/31/2024, we received a Bill of Lading/Vehicle Inspection Report from Al/Old American Iron and was told verbally that it would be there between 8/3/2024 and 8/6/2024.

Again, a couple days passed with no updates or contact from Al or the courier/transporter so we attempted to reach out to Al with no success. We have called, texted, and no response. The Driver’s phone number appears to be disconnected and we have left multiple messages on the working ones. We’ve been scammed.

On 8/9, I contacted my bank to see if it was possible to place a stop payment on the wire transfer and I was told unfortunately no, that wires are just like cash. I’m out $22k!!!! On the same day, my daughter contacted “Al” to inquire about the vehicle as an interested party. She was told by Al the vehicle was still available for sale and set up “an appointment” to go look at and test drive it this coming Thursday 8/15. She inquired if there was any existing interest in the vehicle and was told yes, but that he was waiting on a signed bill of sale from that party. She then asked if she showed up on Thursday 8/15 with cash to purchase if they’d sell it to her and they said yes – KNOWING FULL WELL THEY’VE ALREADY RECEIVED PAYMENT FOR IT!

On all correspondence including the Purchase Order, Bill of Lading, and on the website, the business location is 650 W McKellips Rd Mesa, AZ 85201.

We then contacted the Mesa, AZ police department to inquire about what could be done, if anything, and we were directed back to the victim’s local jurisdiction to file a police report.

Side note: We have family local to Mesa, AZ and asked if they’d be willing to “meet” with Al (for the “appointment” my daughter made) to look at the vehicle with a police escort. My daughter noticed on Google Maps that the most recent photo of the business located at 650 W McKellips Rd was 6 years old – she also noticed another company when utilizing the Google Maps 360 view so she contacted them to inquire if Old American Iron was still their neighbor and was told they’d gone out of business “years ago.” This confirmed the scam and that there’d be no one meeting my daughter at the “appointment” she set for 8/15.

Below is all the information we have on these people.

Found add on Facebook Marketplace – no longer able to locate.

Facebook Marketplace took us to this website:

https://oldamericanironsales.com/listing/1963-pontiac-catalina/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgN... />
Phone numbers provided and communicated with:

623-343-7812 – This is the only number listed on the website and this is Al’s direct cell phone number and the phone he communicated text and photos to us, both my wife’s cell phone and my own.

480-478-0601 – located via Google Search in relation to Old American Iron, out of service.

480-808-6939 – also located via Google search as an old number for Old American Iron – not a working number.

850-970-7146 – Driver info Michael Kelani – not a working number.

Email address associated with Old American Iron listed on Yelp: [email protected] – I emailed to inquire about the purchase on 8/8/2024 and it came back to me as undeliverable.

Yelp has the business listed as closed, however, there’s a recent review from 7/21/2024 that’s “not recommended” that states: “Do not use this company. They never provided purchase and stole our money. Now we have to go after them for wire fraud.”

Neighboring business that my daughter called to see if Old American Iron was still located at the above address: Alumi-Cover Awning Company, Inc. Ph 480-969-2286.

As of today, 8/13/2024, there has been no further communication from Old American Iron, Al, or the driver.
