On February 11, 2024, a scammer pretended to be a friend of mine asking for help sending gift cards and guaranteeing reimbursement. The fraudster used the email of my friend with an underscore in the address that I didn’t notice right away. The person asked if I would send four one- hundred dollar gift cards to her friend’s daughter’s email address. I was told the daughter had cancer and the gift was a birthday present. My (alleged) friend wasn’t feeling well and asked if I could help her with the transaction. The email address sent to me was: [email protected].
