We had a couple of email exchanges during which she told me that the last person she hired designed a book through AI, and there was no continuity in the character. She had already received an AI-generated book cover, which she shared as a reference. I stated that we don’t work with AI and that we do custom illustrations. She agreed and I asked if she preferred 2D or 3D for the book illustration. I shared some character references for her to select a style, and she initially chose 3D, but it was out of her budget, so she opted for the 2D style instead.
After a few email exchanges, she agreed on the package for $750 for 10 pages of illustrations and 4 characters. After her agreement, we shared a written contract via email which she acknowledged. We split the payment into three parts, with the upfront payment being $312, which she agreed to pay. After receiving her permission, we sent an electronic invoice. However, she later got back to us and said she didn’t want to continue right now as she preferred the 3D style and decided to wait until she had more money.
I accepted her decision and suggested that since this was her first book, she should go for the more cost-effective option, as most initial writers do this to see the results they get. I also added that if she didn’t like the book cover after character approval, we would refund her amount in full without asking any questions. I was confident the results would exceed her expectations, as we have been in this field for more than 8 years. She agreed and paid the $312 on December 28, 2024.
We shared the first draft of the character design on Mon, Dec 30, 2024. She provided feedback for changes on the character, but after a few hours, she initiated a chargeback without informing us. She then emailed that she needed a refund. When I asked why, she said she didn’t like the first draft. I mentioned that if she didn’t like the first draft, she could directly ask for a refund without sending revisions. However, she kept asking for the second draft. I reminded her that our agreement was to refund her if she didn't like the book cover. I also mentioned previously that we don't work with AI and asked her not to compare our work with AI-generated images, but she did, insisting on a refund.
I suggested that we design a second draft of her characters, and if she didn’t like it, we would refund her, but she didn’t put back the chargeback. After getting the chargeback, she apologized and wanted to start the project again, which I agreed to, asking for the upfront fee and for her to reverse the chargeback. I also mentioned that she would need to pay an additional $60 for the Stripe and chargeback fees. After that, she didn’t reply, and we lost $372. I have all the proof and emails.
I just wanted to spread the word that Nadia Matthews is a scammer. She first scammed someone else and took a complete book, which she shared with me, and then took characters from us without paying.
