Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I had answered an email about being a Kroger Secret Shopper. Today I received a letter that said I was to go to different stores and purchase EBay gift cards that would total $2450 and bring them home and scratch off the numbers and take photos of them. Then answer some questions about my interaction with the clerks. Enclosed with the letter was a cashier's check for a total of $2850. It said that I was to cash the check and keep $400 for myself. I called the bank it was from and it said that that check was not good. I figured that but wanted to report it so others would not try to cash it.

i did a brief survey/application for a kroger secret shopper...i was "chosen" through a text message. I then received an envelope with instructions and a check for $***. instructions state to purchase *** worth of ebay gift cards with the money and keep *** as commission, then eh will communicate later on what to do with the cards.. I always have "it's too good too be true" in my head at all times. I researched and saw this is a nation wide scam.

I received an email from [email protected] inviting me to be part of their Shoppers team. I didn't think much of this as I am currently a participant in their "My Magazine" sharing network and receive samples and coupons in the mail from Kroger every couple of months and since the email address looked legitimate I responded back to the email with my name, address and phone number. They did not ask for any other information. That email came on July 17th. Today in the mail I received a Priority mail envelope which contained a check for $*** and a letter instructing me to deposit the check, keep $*** and take the rest and buy E-bay cards. Then I was supposed to scratch off the PIN # on the back of the cards, take a picture of the front and back of the cards, write a report on my experience in the store where they were purchased (strange that it didn't need to be Kroger?) and e-mail a copy of the picture and report to the person who had sent the letter. I immediately became suspicious this was a scam because this came from an individual not a company, the check amount was so large, and the fact that I was being asked to purchase gift cards at any store and not groceries at Kroger which was what I thought the original email had stated. As I did further research I found that this is indeed a known scam.
