I received the following email through my business website. I was suspicious due to the use of a gmail address rather than one from the organization he states working for, as well as the all caps spelling of his supposed employer. I hope no one is victimized by this scam.

Here's the email:
"Hello Good day to you,

I trust this message finds you well.

My name is John Beck, And I serve as the coordinator of academic activities and the director of special education at HEMET SCHOOL DISTRICT. During my online research, I discovered your contact details and was impressed by the creativity and
originality of your work while researching online.

As someone dedicated to fostering academic achievement, I am seeking to work with a skilled artist for an upcoming project. I would like to present my ideas for illustration, and I would appreciate it if you could provide a quote for your services. I believe your expertise would be an excellent match for our upcoming workshop in 2025. I look forward to discussing the project specifics with you and receiving your pricing information.

Thank you for your consideration.

Many Thanks,

John."

I also received almost this exact text through a submission on my Wix website artist portfolio. I got excited about receiving a commission request, but I’m extremely glad I did some Googling/searching on Reddit before I went through the trouble of replying.

The email/submission reads as:

“ First name:
JOHN
Last name:

Email:

Company name:
HEMET

Bottom line - anyone representing anything academic, should be using an academic email address.

Same experience yesterday. Glad we weren't fooled and I hope no one else will be!

The message I got is from my Wix site inbox, where he first contacted me. I messaged him back, interested, and he responded. It started getting fishy when his email didn’t match his name and he ignored my price quote and said the budget he had was up to $1,000 per piece. He also didn’t have a contract available or a tax form for me to sign. He took the name from a real person from a real school district and took advantage of the fact that he doesn’t have a photo up on his website. He even added his own photo to the email to make it look more legitimate. He took an image from my website to show what he was looking for in terms of what he wanted. He asked for my name, address, phone number, and bank name so he could “send me a check”. He also gave that weird and awkward greeting at the beginning of each email.

Got an illustration inquiry from a "John Beck" from the email [email protected] (first red flag). The way it was worded and lack of specifics also threw up a red flag, but I decided to bite and asked for more details (scope, budget, project timeline). Surprisingly, I got a full response. He even threw in a piece from my portfolio as an example of what he was looking for stylistically.

But then I saw he wanted to pay with a cashier's check. Googled the email address and found this site. Beware!
Email follows:

Hello Good morning ____,

How’re you today? It’s a pleasure to meet you.

Thanks for your interest in this project & here’s the total breakdown concerning this project;

The purpose for these illustrations are to be used for a presentation in a Workshop coming up soon, the title of the workshop is PRECAUTION AND PREVENTION. Most Diseases are inevitable but can be totally avoided which is why we are using this project to solely to educate the students on the importance of taking safety measures when dealing with any given circumstances using the(previous pandemic) and ohio 2023 OHIO pneumonia outbreak which mostly affected children. Using these illustration scenes as an example to increase survival skills and create more efficient awareness from early age on the importance of precautions when faced with a pandemic such as the Covid Pandemic.

The attendees are students between Grade 6-8 ages of 11-13. I require your service to illustrate the under-listed scenarios, and please make it horizontal (Landscape) presentation, It could be cartoon styled(Characters), colored images but plain background. I have attached an image from your portfolio to serve as similar examples concerning the characters.

The illustrations should fit on a standard letter size - (8.5 x 11") and delivered in PDF format, and I want exclusive right/perpetuity to the images, also note that these illustrations will be handed out to the participants in a printed form, the workshop will be in two Phases.

We have 2 illustrations in Phase One to be finished in 6 weeks.

Then 3 more illustrations in Phase Two are due for submission before the final event in 10 weeks.

Below is the outline of the scenarios to illustrate for Phase one

NOTE; The illustrations characters could be represented in Human/Animal form. Most important is the visualization.

*A group (not more than 5) Maintain a safe distance from others (at least 1 meter) Random suggestion “students standing in a hallway”

* A group (not more than 5) Getting vaccinated

Below is the outline of the scenarios to illustrate for Phase Two:

*Scientist in a Lab setting(E.g trying to come up with a vaccine)

* A group (not more than 5) of male and female health workers wearing a mask.

*Road medical rescue( E.g An individual being conveyed to the hospital on emergency)

My budget for the job is $1,000 max per piece, To cover all 5 illustrations.Total of $5,000) let me know if that's fine. If it's not, please get back to me with the price quote, and what would be your preferred mode of payment? I'm proposing a certified cashier's Check considering the amount involved.Kindly reach out to me if you have more questions as i look forward to hearing from you soon.

Respectfully,

Right from the get go, this email is filled with red flags. Once I saw cashier's check and the amount, I knew it was fake.

I got the same exact one, he ain't even trying

Same as others with fake illustration request. Thought it was legitimate, as they included an illustration from my website and were seemingly specific. It came from JOHN BECK - [email protected]. Once I agreed to the job, they said they would pay me with a cashiers check and asked for my full name, mobile number & name of bank. Thankfully that raised a red flag for me to explore further.

Please watch out for this email! They used a real name and real company in this case a school district… This is what was sent to me:

Hey everyone,
I received the following email below, my spider senses were telling someone was off about this email so I googled [email protected] and this site came up so thank you to everyone that reported this email address. I’m extremely grateful and you have helped people to not be scammed.

HELLO,

Same thing happened to me and the name / school is real too… I hope people aren’t that stupid to fall for this!

I received an email through my contact form on my website requesting an illustration commission. Worded practically word for word as the others reported here.

I had done some research and the person Mr John Woods came up as seemingly a legitimate person.

I did reply and asked for more information and the response was quite convincing. The budget was the giveaway—far too generous for a few illustrated powerpoint slides, and the promise of a cashiers check. Plus, the style of my work was not at all in the style he had requested - very odd and another red flag.

Went with my gut, and finally thought to google the email address: [email protected] . Thankfully found it reported on this site. Next time I get something like this I will check the email address immediately.

Meantime, I sent a response back declining the commission stating that I did not do that type of illustration and I had other commitments, despite the overly large budget.

If I do get a reply back I will be dropping the mask so to speak and let them know I aware its a scam/phishing attack.

- Winneconne, WI, USA

I received this email that I know to be a scam. I had received one like this a few months ago and started working on a project when the scammer sent me a fake check for a high dollar amount (over $7,000). I had a feeling it was a scam and the bank confirmed that it was a fake check.

This email is worded almost exactly like the scam that I almost fell for. It says:  "HELLO,

Good day, Hope you're doing well?
