After some negotiation, the client explains that they will mail me a check for the full amount in a few days.
After getting and depositing the check, I received a 2nd check in the mail for the same amount. Client's responses were typically a day or 2 apart but they were suddenly texting and replying to my emails within a few hours.
The check bounced and I deposited the 2nd check and received a hold on my account. My bank tells me I have fallen for a check fraud and low and behold I google the name "Joss Engelard scam" in google and see that I was not the only one to receive this email.
I worked with my bank to get my restrictions lifted. I made the scammer sign a contract and thus was able to get an address off of them.
I have attached the signed contract, initial email and a screencap of the project details.
