I was looking for houses to rent in Amarillo Texas and came across a great deal for a three bedroom two bath house. I reached out to the seller and sent him my number. I got a text a few days later saying his account was locked and under review for 24 hours. He rushed me into paying half the security deposit and two application fee fees And that’s when I started getting curious. The house listing had been deleted, the paperwork looked like a sham, he was having me send the money via Chime to an account in Indiana, but his phone number was from Florida. Every time I tried to call he would not answer. I woke up to 20 text messages this morning of him asking me if I paid the other half of the security deposit. When I started catching on to the scam, I told him we would pay the other half of the security deposit at the house when we see the paperwork and the keys and then we would sign the lease. He said the meeting would not happen until we paid the rest of the deposit.
